Karla began singing as soon as Momo picked up. "Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy biiiiiiiiiiiirthdaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay dear Mooooooooooooooomo! Happy birthday to you!"
"/Ah? Thank you! You're so nice, but my birthday was last month!/" Masaki replied and then held the phone out to Momoko as she returned from the bathroom. "/It's for you./"
"/Eeek! Masaki-kun?!/" Momoko snatched the phone from him, looking at him like he was crazy. "/Of course it is! It's my phone! Why did you answer?/" She looked at the caller ID and rolled her eyes. "Kaarla!!!!!! Hi hi hi! What's up?"
"/I thought it was urgent?/" Masaki was totally lying and didn't care that Momoko knew it. "/She has a very pretty voice. Is she an idol?/"
"/You were bored and you know it. She's a queen and has a very jealous prince consort,/" Momoko shooed him back towards the kitchen.
"/I don't want to date her./" He rolled his eyes and started to tear down the nearest shake machine. "/Is her prince cute?/"
Momoko didn't bother to answer, laughing as she moved to a table. FAR AWAY FROM THE BAR. "Sorry Karla. My friend is just a busy-body."
"I have no idea what was said from the moment I stopped singing," Karla said with a laugh. "What did he say, what did you say back, and he ruined my very lovely serenade. I'm crushed you missed it?"
Momoko laughed hard. "He said you have a lovely voice and wanted to know if you were an idol... that's kind of an actor model that sings? I told him no, that you were a queen with a very jealous prince, and then he asked if your prince was cute."
"You were singing? What were you singing? I wanna hear it!"
"I sang you happy birthday," Karla said. "I don't know if I can repeat it. The moment might be gone!"
There was much snickering after that, so Momoko could likely guess just how in danger she was of not getting her birthday serenade.
"Well, what did you tell him?" she demanded. "You told him that Warren is cute, right? Super-cute? I can send you a picture if you want to show him!" Karla thought her boyfriend was hot, what? And had no problems sharing that with people a dimension over and half a world away. "Also, jealous? Ha! He didn't even care when I told him I went to a strip club all by myself!"
"It's still my birthday, so you totally have to sing." Momoko got herself comfortable. "And if I told him how cute Warren was, he'd totally try to steal him. Which would make it totally uncomfortable for me when I need my milkshake fix."
Like there was any chance of Warren leaving her. Even though Masaki was totally cute, too. "And if I teased him with pictures of Ronan, he'd never make me another milkshake until I got Ronan here to actually date him."
"Oh, because convincing Ronan to stop by a nummy milkshake shop and meet a cute male would be so hard!" Karla said with a laugh. "They could take turns, making each other dinner and dessert!"
"You are totally going to have to suggest it to him," Momoko laughed. "I don't know Ronan well enough to match-make! I can totally get Masaki to agree, though. And we'd get free milkshakes for life if they hit it off!"
"Oh, see if I won't!" Karla said, her love of romance and greed for tasty shakes knowing no bounds. "You should send me a picture of...Mah--Maz--what's his name again? And I'll show him to Ronan. I need to stop by and visit him anyway, Emma and Jack are living with him right now."
But that was all pretty far afield from why she'd originally called. "So, birthday girl, tell me! How'd you spend your special day? What's going on?"
Karla pulled the phone away to peer at the incoming picture. "Oooh, he's cute!" she said. "You can tell him I said so."
It was really a birthday miracle that Karla didn't hang up on Momoko while sending her one of the pics she had of Ronan on her phone ("Oooh, yes, this one should do nicely!"
( ... )
"Karla?! How do you even have a picture of him looking like THAT?" Momoko laughed and saved that. She was totally waiting to show Masaki the picture until AFTER the books were balanced.
"Birthdays don't matter when you're a policeman! And I had to trade shifts for that visit to Priestly, remember? Jun-san wouldn't agree unless I took her double-shift." She sighed. "And I didn't get to fight the robot. I had to keep the tourists away from the battle."
"Isn't it a good picture?" Karla asked. "It was from the party he, Emma, and Jack threw the other week." The timing was vague because Karla didn't want to bother converting Kaeleeran time back to Fandom. "Getting a picture of Ronan topless isn't very hard. You just need a camera and maybe fifteen minutes of patience."
Fewer than that if, say, it was a party and the temperature was high.
"Mother Night! Your story just gets a billion times worse! That, ugh!, debacle with Tammy is why you had to work extra today? And you were too busy babysitting to even get to fight?" Because, obviously, the only thing worse than having to fight the giant robot was not being allowed to fight it at all! "I think anyone who's silly enough to charge towards the rampaging robot deserves getting squished."
Talking to Karla was totally making Momoko feel better. And giggly. "We totally didn't expect it to be a debacle, remember? Or at least not one for us. And hey, I'm one of those people who runs towards robots, remember?"
She smiled into the phone. "I didn't mind protecting people, but not being able to fight, yeah, that hurt."

"We can send him a picture of Ronan?" she suggested. "Ronan likes making new friends!"
Of the pretty persuasion. Any pretty persuasion.

She snapped a picture as he glanced over at her, distracted by his attempts to balance the day's books. "/Eh?/"
But Momoko was busy sending the image. "/Karla wants to know what you look like!/"
