Bright orange and yellow cackling filled the calm air on the night Elle Bishop turned six. It would have easily been seen as an accidental fire, but Elle, even as young as she was, knew the truth. She herself had burned her Grandmother’s house to the ground. She was scared, didn’t understand how it happened, only that there was a power that escaped her hands. She didn’t want to speak about it. She didn’t want anyone to know what she could do. But her father was intrigued. He wondered what more his daughter could do.

Elle first visited the company when she was seven years old. Curiosity got the better of Bob Bishop. Just how much electricity could his little girl produce? The testing ran hours and he watched as Elle lit up a lightbulb at 40 watts, 60 watts, 100 watts. She lit up a street lamp. She generated enough energy to light up a city block. But when the child began to cry, completely exhausted, Bob pushed on. His little girl was stronger than that.

When she was eight years old, Elle’s ability reached it’s height, sending the power out in Carrol County, Ohio. Then Jefferson, and Harrison and Belmont. She generated enough electricity to overload the power to four whole counties, leaving them in darkness for weeks.

Over the following years, not much changed. She was poked, prodded, tested continuously. She was pushed to the limit and then forced to surpass it. Elle’s life was routine and there was no breaking the pattern.

There was no time for her to attend a real school, “Everything she needs to know she’ll learn from us.” her father would say.

There was no time for her to make friends. “What are friends but enemies you tell your deepest secrets to” she was told by her father.

Elle spent the remainder of her childhood in the confines of the facility. Sixteen years,  honing her ability, learning how to use it to aid the company. She was the strength without the force. With her power, she could make even the strongest of men talk with simply a flick of her wrist.

Often, she would question her life. She trusted her father, would do anything he asked of her. She only wanted to make him happy. It was all she ever wanted. But, Elle couldn’t help but wonder what life outside the facility was like. She wondered if things might have been different if she had been allowed a normal existence. Still, every time, Elle remembered back to what her father had always told her.

“You’re not normal, Elle. You never were.”

It hurt hearing the words from her father, but she knew he wasn’t wrong. She wasn’t normal. She never had been. And the truth was, Elle wasn’t completely unhappy. She could do things that other people would dream about. She had the power to help change the world forever. It was what her father talked about all the time.  And to make her father happy, she would do whatever it took.
