Sir Gawain Drabble Five

Dec 13, 2011 18:30

The fifth of my four Sir Gawain challenge drabbles! (yes, really.) The aim was to write 100 words in response to a section of the poem. I have about seven more of these to write and post (I'll try to spread the posts over the next couple of days) and then I will post the masterlist, probably on Thursday before I go home.

A steed of pure green stock.
Each snort and shudder strained
the hand-stitched bridle, but
his rider had him reined.

“Merlin.”

“Yes, Arthur?”

They’d known each other too long for Merlin to be fooled by Arthur’s calm voice, or Arthur by Merlin’s innocent expression.

“Since I made you Court Sorcerer,” Arthur said, an edge of danger in his voice, “I was under the impression that you were attempting to act like an adult.”

Merlin’s eyes became as round and guiltless as he could make them.

“Arthur, I was just trying to heal your favourite horse,” he said, absolutely truthfully.

Arthur leant forwards.

“That’s funny,” he replied. “Because I don’t remember him being green.”

Merlin swallowed.

“Too much grass?” he offered.
