I've heard high praise of Octavia Butler the past few years, but she never actually made it onto my To Read list. She finally made it on because Jonah's a big fan and my mom mentioned reading a vampire novel she'd written. "Vampire" is one of the key words to make me want to read a book, so I picked it up.

Not tropical temps, though. Which is a blessing. Though low 80s and humid is still rather oppressive. And my hair was kinda gross, which I was unhappy about. Yeah, I know, New Orleans and all and I’m griping about my hair.

I finally read Dracula, followed by the 1994 sequel Mina (written by a woman, Marie Kiraly).

In Bram Stoker’s novel, Mina is so smart but also so pious. [And pieces of the story, especially the end, were so “A Hole in the World” (Angel 5.16). /Whedon!geek] And Dracula is not nearly the attractive romantic antihero he becomes in later ( Read more... )
