"I have never been to Stowcroft before." Kahlan turned and faced Zedd. They had stopped to rest just five miles from the village. "Matter of fact no, Confessor has heard of it."
"The last Confessor that went there, was your mother, Kahlan." Zedd said leaning against the tree. "I was with her on that last trip."
"Why hadn't Stowcroft needed a confessor since then?" Kahlan's left eye brow rose. "Everyone in the Midlands needs Confessors from time to time. None of the villages or cities go decades without a Confessor coming."
"Your mother did such a fine job in Stowcroft - that the people have learned to live peacefully with one another. They had learned how to solve their own problems. Thankfully non of the problems were of any dire." Zedd's head tilted to the right, "They will only had to kill forty people."
"Then why are we going now?" Kahlan curiously asked.
"They heard that you, Dear One, is the new Mother Confessor. They wanted too meet the daughter of their beloved Mother Confessor." Zedd said putting a hand on her fore arm.
"It will be nice to see the village that my mother helped so much." Kahlan said as she began to walk once more.
Zedd breathed in deep; thanked the Creator that he remembered about Stowcroft. In the real worlds time when he had heard that Cara was in trouble in her childhood village, Stowcroft didn't ring any bells with him. He matched the pace of Kahlan.
Within the hour they stood in the center of the town. Looking around to see if they could spot Richard. So far no luck. "Wonder where that boy had gotten too. I told him that we would meet him in the middle of the town. Near the school house." Zedd sighed deeply, "Bags that boy must be discovering something new and interesting too him."
Kahlan laughed gently. "I just pictured you with a young Richard at your side, Zedd."
Zedd couldn't keep the smile off his lips, "That boy was more curious then any child, or adult I had ever seen in my life. I knew he was the true Seeker when he was just a baby. His eyes seeked out the truth even before his mind began to learn the simplest of all things - expect where his mother was."
Kahlan let out a soft pearl of laughter. Her eyes danced as she looked up into the First Wizard's eyes. The laughter paused in her throat as something caught her eye just to the right of Zedd. Her head tilted too the right as she simply watched as the woman in the pale pink dress - with long blond hair down her back was walking towards the schoolhouse. Her breath caught in her chest as she simply watched the golden haired woman simply moved with such grace.
Zedd didn't miss Kahlan's sudden halt. He followed her eyes and body language, and he just stopped himself from letting out a joyful laugh. Kahlan has spotted Cara Mason. He just knew that he had been right in the real time - that just one look at what Cara Mason would have been like if the Mord'Sith hadn't stolen her in her childhood had been correct. His heart ached for his grandson - but leapt in joy for Kahlan's joy.
"I wonder whom she is?" Kahlan whispered. Her eyes just took in the sight of the blond goddess walking up the four steps to the school house door. "I think she would make a wonderful friend."
"I believe she would make a wonderful friend for you, Dear One." Zedd agreed. "I believe she's the school teacher here in Stowcroft. Would you care to see what the children of Stowcroft are learning?" He raised his eye brow and waited for the Mother Confessor to pass the judgment that he knew that she was going to pass.
Kahlan gnawed her bottom lip and considered the request. She truly wanted to follow the blond goddess into the school house - and learn every last detail that the blond would offer up. But she had yet to meet up with Richard. It would be rude to leave the assigned area before he showed up - he could be right now making his way there. He would be upset if he sensed that she had been there, and disappeared. He may even be worried and afraid for her life.
She couldn't do that too Richard.
"Richard should be soon." Kahlan sighed. "I hope." She whispered underneath her breath. She kept her eyes glued firmly on the schoolhouse. Hoping for another glimpse of the blond goddess that had caught her eye.
Zedd wrapped his arm around her shoulder, "I can stay here and wait for Richard, Kahlan. We both don't need to wait for him."
Kahlan smiled at this. She couldn't believe that she didn't think of this solution. "Okay than. Then I'm off to meet this blond goddess whom hopefully will become my friend than."
Zedd held in his laughter. Kahlan simply sounded too cute for words. She sounded like a little girl off on her first Voyager on making a friend outside of her family. He paused in his silent laughter - because this was the exact same thing. For Kahlan Amnell at least.
Kahlan moved away from Zedd's comforting arm and made her way towards the school house. It didn't even feel like her feet hit the road at all. It felt like she was lightly walking on the clouds. She wondered if this is what birds felt like when they were flying. She had to ask the Bird man next time she saw him. Her hand rested on the wood of the stair banner. Her heart was pounding in her chest as she realized just how close she was too the white washed school house door. Just a few more feet and than she would be face to face with the blond goddess.
Her brow grew into an annoyed and angry frown as she felt a hand on her arm. She was about to unleash her power into the idiot who dared to touch the Mother Confessor without permission when …
"Hey Kahlan." Richard said in her ear.
Kahlan swallowed her anger and smiled. Turning her head she smiled into Richard's open happy eyes. "Hello Richard."
Richard tilted his head to the right, "Why were you going into the school house? I told you that I would met you and Zedd over in the center of town." He waved his hand to where Zedd still stood waiting.
"I just wanted to look in side and see where the school children were learning." Kahlan sighed as she turned to face her first friend. She didn't question on why she told Richard a flat out lie. She just felt like Richard didn't have the right to know that she was going to see if the blond goddess was going to be her friend was all.
Nothing at all wrong with not sharing every detail of her life with Richard.
"Oh I see." Richard smiled. "Well, I need too show you and Zedd around Stowcroft first. I have a few people that you need to meet. Resolve some of their conflicts - I'll make sure we have time to explore the schoolhouse before we leave town." He moved aside so Kahlan could move beside him.
Kahlan sighed and nodded. "Of course, Richard." She walked with him back to where Zedd was standing. She couldn't keep the sadness from her eyes. She met Zedd's eyes and he looked compassionately back at her. She felt Zedd's hand on her cheek. She smiled softly and lowered her eyes.
Richard just simply looked at his grandfather comforting the woman whom he loved. He was confused on why Kahlan had lied to him - but he knew that the center of town wasn't the place to question her about it. At first he was upset that she didn't trust him enough to allow him in. But he didn't miss the sadness in her eyes as they stopped in front of Zedd. When his grandfather touched her cheek - it brought back to when he first introduced Kahlan to Zedd. He felt like he would be destroying whatever bond Zedd and Kahlan were forming in that time. He felt that way this time also.
Perhaps when he watched Kahlan inside the school house later she'll allow him in a little. He had a feeling that perhaps the school house held the answer to why Kahlan all sudden decided to shut him out of her soul.
He watched as Kahlan broke the moment by stepping back. "So shall we?" He smiled holding out his hand for her too take. Richard was hurt when she didn't take it. She just started to walk away. He looked quizzically at his grandfather - but he couldn't read Zedd. But he felt like Zedd was telling him that he actually felt sorry for him. Richard was confused on why his grandfather was feeling sorry for him. He pushed the thoughts to the back of his head - determined that when time presented it self - and when the three of them were alone once more - he would get to the bottom of these feelings.
Richard wanted to help Kahlan. As he always had in the past year since they met.
Richard silently walked passed Kahlan, and led the way to the first stop of the afternoon.
