Dream a little bigger, darling.

So I finally saw Inception.  I didn't see it during the summer because I had this silly little hissy fit about how it wasn't the next Batman movie, and I thought the trailers looked overblown.  So I ignored the hype and just didn't see it.

However, I ended up really enjoying it, much more than I initially expected, in fact.  It did have my only Christopher Nolan pet peeve---heavy-handed dialogue---but it felt like it was about more than just the mind-bending special effects, though those did tend to take center stage.

The main emotional storylines (daddy issues, man misses dead wife/wants family back) weren't especially new, but the whole dream-invasion thing put a new twist on them.  While I've heard that some people would have preferred this movie as a horror film, I loved it as heist flick, but I love stuff like Ocean's Eleven and the remake of The Italian Job: a fun movie with a slick cast of charming thieves.  This was the psychothriller version of that.  I wish I could say more about the plot, but it's actually kind of basic and straightforward.  It probably has to be so that Nolan could hang lots of shiny/philosophical ornaments on it.

Also:  I want to believe that the top falls.  I have to.  I need to, dammit.

I generally liked all of the main characters.  I'll put it this way: Arthur impressed me the least; Saito and Eames impressed me the most.  I guess it's because Arthur stayed behind in the second stage, but I ended up feeling like he was less involved than Saito and Eames.  Basically, Arthur got less involved as the story progressed, and I can't quite see why the fandom went so crazy for him, but I don't dislike him.

Moving on...Ariadne was so cute!  So imaginative and understanding!  I could huggle her.  :D  Then again, I always love Ellen Page, so yeah.  Cobb was alright---I could sympathize with him, but I'm not a giant Leonardo DiCaprio fan, so that's probably why I'm slightly skeptical.  Also, he got the majority of the heavy-handed dialogue.

Ooh, Saito!  I didn't expect to love him as much as I did, but...I did.  Mostly for 'shippy reasons that I'll discuss in a minute.

Finally: Eames.  Yes, I know someone will call me a cliche fangirl  for loving Eames, but I did.  If anybody reads this blog regularly, they'll know that I love snarky, sexy supporting characters, and Eames was definitely all of that.  I love him because while everyone else is thinking deeply about their situation, he's like, "So if we die, our brains become scrambled eggs!"  (I'm paraphrasing here.)  Overall, Eames is just my kind of character.  I kind of want a tie-in novel or comic chronicling his wacky forging adventures.

I'm not adverse to Arthur/Eames and would probably love some fic if it was done really well, but while I was actually watching the film, I got more Saito/Eames and Cobb/Eames (when they first meet up) vibes.  I'm not sure if I'd read Cobb/Ariadne because while I get those vibes, I'd rather see it as a mentor-and-student relationship.    And some stupid part of me wants to see Eames/Ariadne because...I'm weird and like shipping characters who don't interact.  Dude, has anyone ever tried writing a fic where Eames seduces someone in a dream using his "forging" skills?  Because that would be awesome.  And sexy.
