Oooh, thank you. I'm definitely looking at Hawthorne, although more the western half of it (Sunnyside).

A friend of mine who just moved back from Portland after about five years had this observation to share about its layout: there are few dense (commercial, mixed-use) districts--mostly there are long main drags surrounded by residential areas. This is unlike a lot of the districts in SF, which are usually a few blocks deep along both axes.

SF spoiled me: I really want to find a place from where I can step out of my door, turn left or right, and find cool stuff within a couple-three blocks. (I lived just off the corner of 18th and Church--three blocks left, I was in the Castro, three blocks right, the Mission. It was FANTASTIC.)

Sadly, such locations tend to be pricier than I'd like to pay... but as realtors will tell you: location, location, location. Living in a vibrant busy neighborhood really improves my quality of life, and since I'd like to find a great place to nest so I don't have to even think about moving until I'm done with school, I think the cool district surtax is just one I'm going to have to pay.

If your daughter has any suggestions or tips about living in Portland, I would be very glad to hear them.
