I hope our trip to Portland way back when helps somewhat with your search for a place. Also, my cousin currently works in Portland (though I think he lives in the suburbs), and I could ask him if he knows any useful Portland insider info, if that might be helpful.
You know, just having made the decision to leave has really helped with my mood.
Decisions can do that.
While I hate to say this, I feel I should: moving up here in December sounds like a bad idea.
Snow. Mountain passes. Moving trucks. Portland itself seems flat enough that it would be manageable in the winter. It's the getting there that worries me.
Regardless, I'd be excited to have you so close for a little while. If you need help unloading a truck, just let me know. Weather permitting, I'll be there.
Yeah, I'm not thrilled at the prospect of a winter move, either. However, I can't really afford to lose the time waiting until more clement weather comes along. Winter quarter starts on the 9th of January. Classes here start around the same time, but it's for spring semester... and there's no way in hell that I'm sticking around until frigging May. Or even until March (taking a term off at this point would throw off my class schedule at PCC
( ... )
Ah, movers. Sounds luxurious. I never even think of that, because I'd never have the means. Even looking at the cost of a U-Haul is making me cringe.
I hadn't thought about a coastal drive, and how that would be different weather. It's such a beautiful coast; I wonder what it would be like in the winter. I imagine it would still be a nightmare in a U-Haul, but I imagine that's a "stuff going separately" idea?
Well, if it's a rainy/snowy winter, hiring movers might be the smarter-but-much-pricier choice.
Taking a quick look at U-haul, it's a lot cheaper (relatively speaking) than movers. For some reason, I thought U-haul would be about twice as expensive as it is, which would have made getting movers a more competitive option.
I'll be doing more research, definitely.
And yeah, the coastal route is only an "I don't want to drive in snow and my stuff is being moved by professionals" option.
If you think we'd get on, I'd love an introduction, too. I have some friends in Portland, but not anything nearly the network I've got in SF. Meeting people that are already vetted, as it were, by cool friends of mine... well, that would just be lovely.
Portland! That is awesome. I'm sure it will suit you much better than the misery of the valley. I love Portland--now I'll have another reason to go there!
You'll definitely have to come visit when you've got the chance!
And if it's early enough, you can even help me shelve books and hang art. :) Or you can wait until I'm nested. I won't say fully unpacked, because it seems that I've always got a couple of boxes still boxed up, no matter where I go--but it's never the same boxes, so I can't really just get rid of the stuff. All things being equal, it's probably a good problem to have.
