Agents of SHIELD 1x02 "0-8-4"

Oct 01, 2013 23:23

I was determinedly optimistic after last week, but I am feeling pretty disappointed right now. Somebody smarter than I am has probably already written the scathing analysis of the whole "SHIELD goes to Peru, shoots lots of brown people, then rescues other brown people who turn out to be bad guys and therefore get tossed out of airplanes and sent to detention facilities" thing, so I will simply say "Really? REALLY? Oh, show, if you want me to like you this is not the way to do it" and move on.

The other thing that bugged me about this ep was that the team seems to be coming together way too quickly. I am not mollified by Skye's text message at the end suggesting that infiltrating SHIELD is part of the Rising Tide's plan, because that only explains Skye's easy capitulation to Coulson's insistence that they're a team.

One of the things I really enjoyed about the Avengers movie was how long (relative to the length of the movie) it took the team to become a team; they spend a lot of the movie bickering before they finally get their shit together, and I *liked* that. It was one of the things I liked about Firefly, too: for all of Mal's "you're on my crew; why are we still talking about this?" a few eps in, there were very real tensions between and among some of those characters that made for some of the show's most interesting conflicts.

Agents of SHIELD appears to be trying too hard to make a team out of a group of people that I just don't believe would be functioning as a team at this point. I cannot believe that Melinda May would be saying nice things about Ward at this point; I'm not sure I believe that she'd still be driving the bus after last week's shenanigans. I cannot believe that Ward, who is supposedly a porcupine, would be listening to Skye in a crisis. (I can believe that he'd listen to May, but I'm not sure I believe that she would talk to him.) I *really* cannot believe that they would all be sitting around having a beer afterwards.

Meh.
