computer rebuild!

I was going to post more VVC stuff this evening, but a) I ended up staying late at work for various reasons, and b) when I got home, my new computer parts were waiting for me!!!

Upgrading the motherboard is a bit of a pain because it involves an OS re-install, so I had been thinking that, in the interest of spending the weekend vidding rather than troubleshooting, I might just install the new graphics card, new power supply (because my old one cannot possibly handle the new graphics card; you guys, I am actually a little alarmed and possibly slightly turned on by this card, it is enormous and so pretty), and new RAM and postpone the mobo/CPU upgrade for a few weeks, because -- okay, here's the thing. My current computer is doing just fine with DVD source, and it was doing okay with a little bit of HD source, but a full season of HD source is making it cranky and petulant. I would really really really like to get one of these damn Glee vids finished before the new season starts, and that is unlikely to happen if I spend this entire weekend installing and troubleshooting a whole new setup, but my Glee S4 source is HD.

I suspect that if I addressed the worst of the bottlenecks, which is the graphics card, the current system would become much more usable -- and in theory that would just be a matter of swapping in the new card and installing the new drivers. (In practice, as noted, it also means replacing the PSU, but that is not a big deal... unless I have a motherboard/PSU conflict like I did when I built my first from-scratch machine back in 2005, but hey, at least now I know that that can happen, which I did not in 2005. Live and learn.)

Anyway, I guess I could still do a partial upgrade, but the new RAM won't work in the old mobo; I'd forgotten that the old mobo can only take 4GB sticks, so it can have 16GB total but only in a 4x4GB configuration. The new RAM is 2x8GB.

What I really don't want is to do a partial upgrade, try to vid, and then discover that no, I really need the full 16GB of RAM, in which case I will then have to pull everything out of the case (well, okay, not everything, the drive bays are totally self-contained) and do the full upgrade anyway. I don't mind doing it twice if it buys me a couple of weeks of vidding time in the interim, but if it doesn't, I will be super pissed about the wasted time, and I don't think I can handle either the wasted time or the anger. Heh.

Okay, I think I have just talked myself into doing (which is to say starting) the full upgrade tomorrow night. Cross your fingers for me.
