Friday Night Lights 5x01, "Expectations"

OMG this show. THIS SHOW.

The continuity was amazing -- not just the way major plot stuff is following on from the events of last season, but just... everything. Crucifictorious and their "huge show" with twelve people in the audience! Eric and Julie playing ping pong! Landry and Julie talking about Matt! Vince talking about his dad!

I've missed these characters so much. And I love seeing where they are now, and where they're going. Vince and Jess are together! Vince and Luke are running buddies, and also Coach's right-hand men! (
kass, I thought of your vid EVERY TIME THE TWO OF THEM WERE ONSCREEN TOGETHER.) Landry is GOING TO RICE OMG (those of you unfamiliar with Texas may not understand how absolutely perfect this is, but trust me, IT IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.) Julie is insisting on driving herself to college! Vince is teaching Jess's little brother Andre how to be the man of the house! Billy is trying to model himself on Eric, the molder of men! Tami is trying to save every single at-risk teen in East Dillon! ...and oh man, watching her bang her fists on the brick walls of apathy and poverty is going to make for some amazing, painful stuff, isn't it.

I am just all aflail with how much I love them all.

And I'm curious about what the season is setting up with this first game. Throughout the ep, the Lions' 2-8 record from last year is emphasized; yeah, they beat the Panthers when it counted, but most of their triumphs were the good losses, the games where at least they were IN the game. This week they beat the reigning state champs through a couple of strokes of luck (and oh, the quietly fraught moment when the player on the opposing team is injured -- an echo of Jason Street's injury in the very first episode, and we just know Eric's thinking about it even though the announcer doesn't mention it). And yeah, that does change the expectations; that changes the game.

It's already clear to me that one of my FNL vid ideas, which I'd hoped to work on before the end of the year, is going to have to be postponed because it's going to be my goodbye to the show. Which is okay -- I have plenty of other FNL vidsongs to play with in the meantime. And I just might have to start playing sooner rather than later, because oh, this show. ♥
