Tonight, my union voted not to call off the strike. So I'll be out tomorrow at 7am taking signs, flyers, and coffee to the picket lines all over campus, because I'm lucky enough to have a car and no child care obligations.
I am so tired. And I feel really old. I don't want to have to do this.
But we have to do this.
I've benefited for the past seven years from the tuition waiver that was won by union members long since gone, who did a lot of difficult and boring work for benefits they would never see. I owe that same commitment to the TAs who will be here next year, and five years from now, and ten years from now. I owe that to my students, who don't deserve to see their degree's value fall when this school's reputation sinks.
It kills me that the lowest-paid, shortest-term state workers are the ones thinking about the long-term health of this university. But there it is.
There's been other stuff going on that I want to write about at some point. But not now.
