“This is so lame.”

Michael glanced over at his sister, and she echoed the sentiment, even if she didn’t say it. They loved their father. They did. But there were some things that they really didn’t want to spend their perfectly good Saturday afternoon doing whatever their father wanted to do. But Mom was out of town, and they had the misfortune of having nothing to do, so Dad was hijacking the opportunity to spend quality time with his kids. Which, you know, was fine when they were little and he would take them to the zoo, but as they’d gotten older their interests had not only matured, but gone in completely separate directions.

Sam looked over at them at the statement, before rolling his eyes slightly. “C’mon guys. You really want to sit inside and do nothing all day?”

“Yeah,” they both said simultaneously, giving their father a look. Michael rolled his eyes up to the ceiling, while Sophia just took a breath as she leaned back in her chair, crossing one of her legs in front of her as she checked her nails.

“Face it, Dad. We’re never going to be able to find something we all want to do.”

“I think we can manage,” Sam replied, giving them a look. “What did you guys plan on doing today?”

“I was going to go shoe shopping,” Sophia perked up before Michael could respond. “There’s a dance coming up for Halloween, and I already have a dress, but I need shoes. And jewelry. And a new bag.”

Sam stared at her for a moment, and Michael gave his father a horrified look. “I am not following her around and being her personal bag boy all day. No friggin’ way.”

Sam held up his hands, eyes closed. “Sweetheart, I was thinking something we all could do.”

“But, Dad,” Sophia’s voice came up to a near whine. “The dance is at the end of the week, I need to get that stuff.”

Sam just gave her a look and she took a huffy breath, before leaning back. “Fine. What do you want to do, jerkface?”

“Sophia-”

“Army versus Navy is on,” Michael said with a grin, tossing the football in his hands. “Kick back, fried food-”

“Oh, yeah, because men beating each other senseless over a leather ball that isn’t even a ball is really my idea of a great way to spend the afternoon.”

“Well, your idea wasn’t that much better, Princess.”

“At least mine was practical.”

“Practical for you.”

“Well, it’s better than eating like a pig for no apparent reason-”

“Guys. GUYS!”

Sam’s voice cut over the top of them, giving them both an exasperated look, before running a hand over his face. “You know what, forget it. Go do whatever you want.”

Sophia beamed in her father’s direction, starting to get up and head towards her room, before turning back to her father. “Daddy, can I have money for the mall?” Sam sighed before handing over the cash she was asking for, and she gave him a quick peck on the cheek before flouncing out of the room. Michael just pushed himself up, clapping a hand down on his father’s shoulder with a bit of a grin.

“These are the moments you’ll cherish, right Dad?”

Sam stared at him for a moment, before shaking his head. “C’mon. Let’s go watch the game.”
