The short but sweet reading meme.

I'm meeting up with some friends today; I was going to walk into town (it's 5 miles, so only about an hour ... and would save me the bus fare, money which could be spent on an extra pint of beer! XD), buuuut today is cold and grey and wet. Extremely wet. So just killing a few minutes before I go and catch the bus. :P

What are you currently reading?
Boudica: Dreaming the Eagle by Manda Scott. I picked it up on a whim from a charity shop (there was a WALL of historical fiction. I was in paradise. Or at least I was until I realised I already have way too many books on my to-read pile, so I forced myself to only buy the one). I love warrior women and Boudica's tribe, the Iceni, are East Anglian ... and I do like to obsess over my local heroes (hello, Hereward!). It is absolutely fantastic, I adore it and will definitely be getting the others in the series. The characters are warm and convincing and the way she describes daily Celtic life is informative without being a massive info-dump. AND SHE KNOWS HORSES. It really is a pleasure to read a book where the author actually knows what she's writing about.

What did you recently finish reading?
I have been a very slow reader for the past couple of months - the last book I finished was back in October, and that was Terry Pratchett's Monstrous Regiment. Which was superb and beautiful and funny and sad and I highly recommend it. Also I was pleasantly surprised to find that it features Sam Vimes in it: my all-time favourite Discworld character (although after reading this book, Sergeant Jackrum comes a very close second).

What do you think you’ll read next?
I've just discovered that Joanne Harris had a follow-up to Runemarks published this summer - entitled Runelight. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get it (only £6 at Amazon at the moment). I read Runemarks years ago and loved it (mostly for the Loki), so I'm hoping this one will be as good.
...Then again, I've also found my copy of Dorothy Dunnett's King Hereafter which I left here months ago, having read the first couple of chapters. So maybe I will finish that first.
