What qualities does the White Cockatoo have in this poem? How are they conveyed in the language of the poem?
To answer the first question, the cockatoo is greedy when it comes to food. He also plays didjeridu; he dances, leaps, gorges and belches. This cockatoo has his home in Ngaljipa, yet his birthplace is Gulgulnga. This cockatoo likes to eat corn and grass seeds like the rarrcha grass that grows a lot at Ngaljipa and Gulgulnga.
To answer the second question; I think the cockatoo is expressed as a loud happy-go-lucky sort of bird. The poet expresses a favourable moment and as the poet watches this bird he also acknowledges the strength it has, as it flies a great distance between it’s birthplace Gulgulnga and it’s forest home at Ngaljipa.
