Happy 4th! I get to be a Horta!

Hello! Welcome to my life in July 2006! Hope all of my friends on LJ had a good 4th!

My husband and I had a barbecue over at a friend's house. I made a monster salad that turned out so good! Two of the fellows (not my hubby, thank God!) set off $50.00 worth of fireworks with a bunch of different fountains mostly and some Roman Candles. I thought some of the fountains were just lovely. And we didn't have anything that was loud at all, for which I was grateful. We had a good time.

I have been spending time online at http://www.startrekfreedom.com. After many years of dreaming about it, I get to play a Horta! Hooray! See my bio for Ensign (jg) Naraht the Horta at http://www.startrekfreedom.com/fleet/mystique/bios.php?bios=1393.

Naraht just got onboard the good ship USS Mystique after a hungry seven days in a shuttle craft. He shares my sense of wacky sense of humor and my wonder at the universe. I just can't keep him away from any windows that look out into space. He holds the distinction of being the first Horta in the 52nd Fleet and potentially in the Star Trek universe, certainly within this incarnation of Star Trek.

Hortas are rock and mineral eating creatures that resemble molten rocks jumbled and melted together. They exude a highly corrosive acid to melt their intended "food" for immediate ingestion. This feeding behavior creates tunnels and cave structures that makes them the greatest natural miners and geologists in the universe.

They first appeared in Star Trek original series with Kirk, McCoy and Spock in the episode entitled Devil in the Dark. Many fans later declared that the Horta looked much like a large albeit lumpy pepperoni pizza with extra sausage. After reading about Ensign Naraht in two of the ST paperback books years ago, I had always wanted to play him, but now I really have the chance!

Oh, the plot twists for story lines with a Horta! On this site, we have a PBEM (Play by e-mail) story line going, with narrative supplied by ourselves. Upon graduating from Academy where they teach you how to post, your character gets assigned to a ship and introduced into the ongoing storyline with various subplots provided by the different players. We are at the end of a story line/beginning of another. This is a good place for me to be since the First Officer/Story author was rubbing his hands together in glee over having a Horta.

Getting him onto the ship turned out to be an adventure all by itself since they didn't know he was coming and he didn't know they didn't know. He couldn't eat on board the shuttle safely without dissolving it, so by the time he got onboard the Mystique he was a starvin' Marvin! So he was desperately trying not to salivate acid. The situation was analogous to a starving person riding around in a giant hollowed out cake; edible, yet not necessarily nutritionally optimal and way too rich!

Very funny stuff! Apparently, Naraht will play an important part in the upcoming adventure in solving the puzzles presented by the strange anomalies that exist with the planet the ship is currently orbiting. Naraht hasn't met but a few crewmembers and only one of the other player characters, much less gotten assigned to an away team. I have finally gotten him into close proximity with the First Officer in Ten-Forward to try to report in! Yay!

To check out the Horta as a species please see the article I wrote with some help from various persons: http://www.startrekfreedom.com/wiki/index.php/The_Horta_Report
