Watching The Nestbox

My parrotlet pair, Apollo and Starbuck, have been making more moves toward nesting and starting a family. Both of them are spending more time in the nest box, and they’ve worked it up to perfection (for them!). Starbuck has plucked a brood patch on her chest, and spends time in the nest box more often. I’m anxiously awaiting that first egg.

As I know from past experience, the bird breeding game can be a waiting game. It’s up to the birds to decide when to start a clutch, and aside from providing good food, a nice nest box with nesting materials, and the right amount of daylight and the right environment, there’s not a lot we can do. Each bird has its own personality. A breeding pair won’t act like robots, nesting on schedules that we set for them. No, they’ll go in their own time…if they go at all.

So I’ll watch the nestbox and keep you updated. Here’s hoping soon, we’ll have eggs…
