Summary: Kairi dreams of faraway places...and faraway people.

Kairi dreams, at night, and she sees other lands. Most of the time, they are strange - she sees a world underwater, and one that is always Halloween, and a giant whale that swallows people up like her teachers say real whales munch on algae - and she thinks they’re simply fantasies. She’s a bit old now for such childish fantasies, but Selphie giggles and tells her that she’s Kairi, it’s to be expected that her late-night secrets are made-up worlds and storybook adventures.

Kairi doesn’t think this should have been expected at all, though. She doesn’t think she’s supposed to know - or is it remember? - these awesome worlds that her heart tells her twinkle in the moonlit sky. A part of her - her heart, it must be her heart - tells her that these worlds aren’t made up. That they are real, and that someone close to her was there.

She doesn’t know his name; she doesn’t know why she doesn’t know. She remembers Riku, a tallish boy who was older than her and was her friend. She can’t hear his voice, though. She can’t see his face. She can’t remember his best friend.

Then the dreams shift one night, and she remembers a fearsome castle that’s all white inside - like her father says she is, though the castle isn’t sugar-white, it’s ice-white - and she remembers a sugar-and-ice girl who is her and yet is not. Kairi, confused, wakes up from that dream and dreams no more for a week.

When she dreams again, it is not of the her-not-her girl, but instead of an ice-boy who looks like Kairi imagines Riku would look, if she could still remember his face. The ice-boy speaks to her, every time she dreams, and tells her such lovely things. She’s pretty sure she should laugh at him - she can protect herself, thank you, and yes, she does know she’s pretty - but she doesn’t because this is a dream, and it’s best to be nice in dreams. So she tells the boy spun-sugar tales, and it takes Kairi three whole dreams to realize that it isn’t her mouth that is working, it is another’s; it takes her another dream to realize that, even if she is living this dream, the ice-boy is not speaking to her. Kairi wakes up one morning and suddenly knows that she has been the sugar-and-ice girl all along. She also suddenly knows that this girl, who can’t be her, has been lying to the ice-boy.

It’s all very confusing in Kairi’s head, especially since she doesn’t know any names. In her head, she calls the other girl Sugar and the boy Riku, even though her heart twinges and tells her that that’s wrong.

Kairi stops dreaming after a few more weeks, but her last dream is of the ice-boy defending her against someone who could hurt her. She wakes up and immediately goes back to sleep, trying to dream up the ending. She wants a resolution, even if it isn’t hers. Even if it’s the sugar-and-ice girl’s. She wakes up several hours later, dreamless and uncomfortable.

It is not until a year later, after the real Riku is back, and with him his best friend Sora and all of everyone’s memories of them, that Kairi finds out that the ice-boy was long-dead before she ever dreamed about him.

It feels silly to mourn, but Kairi does anyway, because even the death of a dream hurts.
