Cats generally prefer folks that don't seem to care about them. Our cat is one of them long-haired types... particularly bad for allergic folks.

I think your best bet is to try and pick up the cat right away and hug it... talk some baby talk. Cats don't like that on the first date so they are less likely to check you out in closer detail while you are sleeping.

That's good advice. If I encounter cats other than these two I will implement that strategy. As for these two cats, the one is frightened by my sneezing and the other one is plum lazy and sits under the table the entire time. My baggage on the other hand is quite appealing to them.
