Voting Day Update

Nov 04, 2008 16:14

Voting this morning took about an hour. The line was just as long (between 40-50) when I left than when I arrived.

Every polling place I've driven past has been a beehive of activity. Very good news for our side.

After voting, I reported to the local Obama-Biden campaign office, which is where the Gary Peters rep sent me to do Election Day volunteering. I was handed a precinct map in western Farmington Hills, and a "walk list" of houses to visit as part of the massive nationwide GOTV (Get Out the Vote) effort. I also had a partner; she was nice enough, about my age, but she didn't have a cell phone and had to leave at 12:30 to pick up her dog.So I kinda doubt I'll see her again.

The canvassing went well. As expected, about 70% of the doors we knocked weren't home, and we had a few home addresses of students who were away at school. Of the people I actually spoke with, there was 100% support for Obama and Peters, much of it quite enthusiastic. Those were some good walk lists.

(GOTV walk lists are supposed to bypass true undecideds and Republican households, to minimize wasted effort -- and the ones I worked with were better than the ones I used in 2004 and 2006.)

The day was the most beautiful early November day I've ever experienced in Michigan. About 60 degrees when I voted, 65 rising to 70 while I canvassed -- sunny the whole time and very little wind. If that doesn't boost the vote count, nothing will (see "beehive of activity" above).

vote, 2008, peters, obama
