I actually like David Thorpe's writing style. That's not to say I agree with his points of view, but the way he presents them makes me laugh. He's one of the few people whom I can tolerate hating the music I like because he can at least do it in an entertaining way. Besides, every time he says something bad about the music I like, I just remind myself that the little bit of indication of stuff he likes has pretty much been festering piles of fetid shit that one would have to be daft to call music.

The main thing you have to keep in mind is that unlike Ann Coulter who at least purports to believe the stupid shit she spews, Thorpe is writing humor for a comedy website, which means there's a lot of free license there. The Chans and SA and ÆD are fun to read. I find them hilarious. The important thing is to remember not to take them seriously.

On the other hand, they are the cancer that is destroying the Internet. Where once it took some actual effort and brainpower to troll a website, now all they have to do is post pictures of goatse and copypasta racist propaganda in all caps five hundred times until the shock factor wears off. It's perpetuated a lazy form of rebuke that isn't so much hurtful or enraging as it is simply annoying. It's like the buzzing of gnats compared to the foreboding hum of a swarm of hornets that trolling used to be - slightly irritating and ultimately forgettable as all you really have to do is block them for a couple of hours and the ADHD kids will forget what they're doing and move on to a new target.

Then again, even the veteran Chan members, (who comprehend the purpose of the Chans), hate the newbie idiot kids who use Chan tactics to troll real websites. Quite frankly, I'd suggest dropping a nuke on the entire convention. Nothing of value would be lost because the responsible members of the web forums would have absolutely no interest in going, leaving only the idiots that they want to have eliminated from their forums anyway.

You really could make an academic study of /b/ and the others. Just the other day, Jeff was outlining a similar thesis to yours--that /b/ is a sacred playground of sorts, and what goes on /b/ is patently unacceptable elsewhere. Newbies are forgetting this and essentially taking Fight Club where it doesn't belomg.
