Rewatch S1: Ep 05 to 06

Dec 14, 2008 17:59

I've already stumbled upon a mistake in the Supernatural Timeline that I usually use, so I'm quite happy with my decision to keep track of days in the series. It means though that there is TONS of unaccounted for time between episodes, also the weather doesn't make any sense. Basically episodes 3-5 take place between November 14th and February 27th ( Read more... )

Minor spoiler for S4, Ep 1

In modern Witchcraft (which I hope you will not confuse with Satanism, as Kripke & Co. have chosen to do), circles have tremendous significance. Show uses the protection aspect, but the only time I can remember their using the importance of the circle as a way to entrain communal energy is in the seance scene in Lazarus Rising.

That's all the opening I need to suggest that Sam and Dean's bracelets might symbolize the strength of unbroken unity between them, possibly including their father and other good guys, or something along those lines. They might even have been consecrated to such service in some Winchesterian variation on ritual. Maybe Bobby made them and gave them to the boys just as he's given them amulets on occasion.

Our boys may be down on Witchcraft (of the Kripke variety, and with good reason), but they seem perfectly reconciled to the magickal properties of rosaries, pentagrams, runic symbols and other protective devices. The bracelets could come and go because they're worn for a purpose, then are respectfully discarded when that purpose has been met -- or the bracelet's been damaged in a fight or something.

I'll have to stash this idea away for a scene or two in a story I might write someday. Hmmm... wanders off muttering, her mind in a witchy fog

Ahhh...that makes sense! I like that explanation. The boys use a lot of witchcraft lore when it's for protection, so that fits in well! I've noticed in the first season so far that Dean wears two bracelets, and Sam wears one. Whether or not it's intentional, it fits in well personality wise...since Dean's two bracelets could symbolize both John and Sam, whereas Sam's could just symbolize Dean.

Anyway, something to think about. Thanks for the information!

Sweet thinking on your part, the business about why Dean might wear two bracelets to Sam's one.

Please also note that the bracelets they wear are of the type that have to be tied on by someone else, and aren't roomy enough to slip off. (Dean's beaded one might be on elastic thread, but I'm going to pretend it isn't.) This also speaks in favor of ritual.

The more I think about this, the more I see it. Thanks for the topic!

Thank YOU! I love this angle on the bracelets. Until I'm given anything official, this is now what I will believe! I also really like sweet sentimental things (obviously) so this just makes me giddy.

Hey, feel free to scribble something sweet that makes use of the idea. None of us can possibly lay exclusive claim to any of the ideas that Show plants in our brains :-) I, for one of no doubt many, would love to read whatever you might be inspired to write. (Why do you think I friended you, silly goose?)

*blush* You're a sweetheart.

I'm definitely going to mull it over for a few days and see what I come up with. I've got a couple of vague ideas already circling. Mmm...ideas...I like to keep them in my head for a few days, just because they feel so nice. ;)

Oh, I like the two to one explanation! And the protection explanation from above!
