He had died.
In a sense, because he had died, he had failed. Failed to reach the end, but close enough for the failure to really sting. His last words had been “Let’s meet in Paradise,” but when he opened his eyes, Tsume knew he had strayed off the path. The first thing he saw was white and a murky blue. It was hard to tell what anything was, but a couple blinks solved that problem. Dense fog. An ocean.
Why was he alive? Why near an ocean? He had died on the mountain, the snow slowly drifting down as Kiba raced up the side after that Noble. He remembered falling on the frigid ground, his body hastily becoming the same temperature. He recalled closing his eyes, feeling so tired, so exhausted. He just needed rest.
He just needed to sleep. He would go after Kiba when he woke up.
Now he was awake, but there wasn’t a familiar scent to be found anywhere. He breathed deeply, surprised to find that his side had stitched itself back together. His ribs in perfect place, his lungs not filled with blood. The energy from his body was still drained and he felt like never getting up again.
And how could he? He was lost, everyone else was lost. Blue, Hige, …Tobe. Did Kiba manage to survive? He wanted to believe so, but the evidence all around him was quickly squashing that hope. This wasn’t Paradise, which meant Kiba had failed. Tsume didn’t understand if this was a second chance to find Paradise, or if this was the end of the line. A second chance was too much to ask for, especially when it meant that if he had gained one, everyone else must have, too.
His instincts knew otherwise, but that human side of him refused to accept the truth. After a struggle, Tsume managed to get to his feet, his previously injured leg still full of painful pins and needles. He would find his way back or die trying. With a limp, he started off down the sandy stretch.
