so friday rolls around again... has it really been a week...?
saturday, i went out to eat with pamela at octopus, then headed back to church, since no one my age was really around... we were going to distribute christian literature to the nearby community, and me being an "adult," (i'm over 18, but not 21 yet... an adult that isn't legally liable to supervise kids at sponsored events) i helped allen and casey, together with mom, distribute literature around allen's house... we got such a bad response... one house flat out turned us away, and everyone else didn't answer their door... we gave up after a full block, decided to leave the pamphlets on their porches, then headed to the mall to try out passerbys... allen and casey made it a contest... we ended up giving up, and leaving the leftovers on different benches in the mall, hoping that some curious soul will pick it up and read...
we had to meet back at church to report on our experiences... sad to say, our group had one of the least productive and successful experiences, compared to everyone elses... i truly give props to katrina, for spending a whole summer colportering... that really IS hard, and humbling... afterwards, dad wanted to cook dinner for a couple of us, so i had nice bonding time, talking to alyssa, finding out about her school life and personal life... kaitlyn came by, and we ended up swapping high school stories, i share my past, and she share her present... always fun...
since it was a long weekend, valerie convinced me to go to the banquerigo's house with them and go swimming... allen, alyssa, val, pam, ben, and i enjoyed about an hour of swimming, before deciding that it was time to turn in and eat... we ate at kabuki, in one of those japanese style rooms, which was fun at first, until we had some of the laziest service ever... decided that i didn't want them driving me all the way home late, so i slept over... played guitar hero, watched a movie... pretty fun... the next day, the girls got pedicures while allen and i walked around the mall, window shopping, looking at things we'd love to buy, but don't have money for...
this week, i've been supervising at GAA... while mr mohr auditioned the junior high kids individually in his office, i made sure the next student was ready, as well as making sure everyone got their new band book... it was okay... funny hearing all my church kids calling me "mr osio" as opposed to "kuya john..." i also got to teach a 6th grader, asia, privately on the mallets... it's a lot of fun, working one on one with a student, especially at that age, when they're so eager to learn... just being able to be in a situation where you can observe how everything works, from the inside out has been one of the best things i've done this summer... i've got some insight on how rehearsals run, learned how to deal with stressful, frustrating circumstances, and see eager fifth graders get the instruments that suit them best... got to help the junior high percussionists figure out their parts... i've also helped walk mr mohr through circumstances with his quitters, where he complimented me on how my advice sounded so professional and usable... i guess i'm starting to think like a teacher, eh? all those roy classes have really started to sink in, i guess...
nice being able to reminisce with mrs mohr for almost 2 hours... nice having sushi at octopus again, with valerie and jason... nice being able to play super mario strikers with eunice and jason... nice being able to spend time, playing xenosaga III, seeing the ending of the trilogy unfold...
by the way, mrs mohr helped me refine my future plans... i wasn't sure about my masters, but she's convinced me to get my masters in instrumental conducting, as well as it being my secondary area for my doctorate in theory... good stuff... glad to have that figured out...
bonfire today, at huntington beach... i finally got to play my game of ultimate frisbee! alyssa/casey/emily/jason/me versus allen/derek/nicole/timmy/zach... my team lost, but it was okay... i got that out of my system! i've been wanting to play since spring break! a lot of people went... got to practice our pathfinder skills and build a hefty bonfire... got to introduce a new style of making smores... jon brought canada dry and cactus cooler, two of my favorite sodas! overall, just a chill, relaxing time in the beach with family/friends... a nice way to spend my last weekend at church, since next week, i have to go camping with the pathfinders, and the weekend after, i'm back at PUC...
man, where has my summer gone...?
