Click here to skip the tantrum and find the sigs" Whoever said that "times change, people change?" probably never heard about "Same shit, different day".
I've experienced that recently - not that it'd be the first time or the last one in my lifetime. It's no unexpected catharsis - far from it - but just another hiccough to break the routine...but it's not always for the best.
Why am I saying that, will you ask?
Well...it's all because of XP - and the joy/hassle of changing, of evolution.
Upgrading to XP was a pain in the ass. When Microsoft gets a godforsaken new OS up on the market (with mitigiated reviews, btw) with bugles gloriously sounding in the background, it also means that Big Bill might also drop development and support on some of his earlier products. It's logical, it's part of marketing, blah-blah-blah. You all heard it before, so let's just cut it and zoom for the goal. Microsoft dropped Win98 a year or two ago - the system's old and there's not much we can do with it nowadays - at least for people who have the means to upgrade or buy new things. The problem is that groups like Symantec and others are even more radical than that (Norton AntiVirus is now only available for XP...grrrr) and are already one step or two ahead of the deadline. Till even a month ago I was still plundering on Windows 2000 SP3, while everyone had been using their faithful XP mule for a few years already.
Let's not be dramatic: I didn't see the possibility (as it was just that; there's no proof it it yet) of Win2K losing some attention from Microsoft as the end of the world and neither did I feel the proverbial noose tightening around my neck. FAR from it. But nevertheless, I decided to call it quits and finally take that fateful step - abandon W2K for its successor. Embrace the future, yadda, yadda. I couldn't have even envisioned how many problems I'd have with this transition.
I had a first try - only to see that my 10Gb partition was getting small with all programs and personal files installed. Undeterred, I regrouped everything and realized that the other partitions were also getting cramped. Resigned, I had to buy a frigging 250Gb HD, open up my PC, skewer its innards, create four 61Gb-each partitions and reinstall the damn OS, then bring my files and settings back - not to mention refurbish everything with Photoshop, Office, CCCP, Azureus, mIRC and whatnot.
The fun had only started. It ended abruptly when I saw that a few DVD-ROMs with manga scanlations and other things were missing. MIA. Vanished. Shanghaied. I still haven't found them, by the way...they're still eluding my bloodshot eyes. Were they stolen by a visiting buddy of mine? Dunno. Did I hide them somewhere? Search me. I'm clueless. Clueless and about to blow up like Mount Vesuvius on Pompeii. Having about 20Gb of missing data is not like picking a pebble of sand from a beach. It's like having the Statue of Liberty missing its head or its torch - or Disneyland without Mickey Mouse or Space Mountain.
Anyway, I now have everything up and going, although I still miss some features from my old, rugged and trusty Windows 2000 SP3. But beggars can't be choosers. I made the choice and it's now my job to take responsibility for the consequences. For the most parts, I'm satisfied - not ecstatic to the point of dancing the samba in the middle of the street, but content. The prospect's not pitch-black. Just gray. "Hope is kindled", like a certain Gandalf said.
So, anyway, here are the first GFXes made on Photoshop with XP - MS Vista still has a long time coming to us commoners and I doubt I'll buy it until a Special Pack One version will come out to fix the shortcomings and other queer bugs that are reportedly plaguing the current Vista.
