I'm on a serious Sleeping Beauty binge as I prepare to start writing my retelling. For your enjoyment,
another retelling, the poem Carabosse. (Carabosse, and not 'Maleficent', is the originaly name of the unpleasant fairy. I highly prefer Carabosse because it doesn't sound evil.)
I'm not exactly sure when I'm going to start writing it -- the watershed will probably break eventually. It's going to involve some fun and very un-traditional aspects; my bad!evil!sorceress will be named Carabosse because it's a beautiful name. And ooh--- that's good. The Princess is going to be named Cordelia. Wonderful counterpoint then, between two C-names.
If you have some time and the willingness to shatter childhood illusions about Sleeping Beauty, read La Belle Au Bois Dormant - there's all kinds of fun stuff like orges, cannabalism, vipers, table sets made out of diamond and gold. (The version before that, Sun, Moon and Talia, is just twisted, man.)
