I pledge:
To notice something beautiful every day, whether it is a stranger’s subconscious smile, a dandylion growing in a sidewalk crack, or the one star in my grey city sky.
To accept that I am a product of conflicts and small hypocrisies. I am a balance of light and dark, love and hate, doubt and faith, tears and laughter, hope and fear, depression and mania, strengths and weaknesses, achievements and failures, dirt and stardust, matter and the vacuum of empty space, and future and past.
To remain innocent, optimistic, and trusting, even as the world tries to make me jaded.
To experience the world with all my senses. I will not only see beauty and hear music, but also know the smells of my walk home, the flavor of a fresh breeze, and the caress of sunbeams.
To look for four-leaf clovers on sunny days, and rainbows on cloudy ones.
To look out of windows, climb trees, and know the names of flowers.
To keep my head in the clouds, but my feet on the ground.
To live in the present, but carry talismans of my past, and the candle flame of my future.
To never allow myself the excuse of boredom. Every time I am tempted, I must learn, create, or become something new.
To put my heart into everything I do.
To allow myself to change, but still be true to her, even as I am still discovering who she will be.
To be the person I claim to want to become.
To not just survive each day, but live it.
This I pledge to do, by the stars in my soul and the friends by my side. These are the principles that will guide me east of the sun and west of the moon, to the place where the maps say, ‘Here be dragons’, for it is there that the universe is made, and it is there that a person may change the world.
