Prologue: Building the Lie

JaeJoong made his way out of the hospital, his mind in a spin of uncertainty. So many questions were running through his brain at the moment, and he was having trouble putting his thoughts in order to decide on which questions were most important. But he realized that it probably didn’t matter anyway. Because no matter what order his brain sorted out, the fact that he needed to get some answers wouldn’t change.

The oncoming headache was bound to be terrible, he knew. The telltale throb in his temples had him massaging the bridge of his nose as he boarded the bus. But as he settled down on one of the available seats, he allowed a small hint of a smile to occupy his lips.

When he crossed the threshold of this relationship with YunHo, they had both resigned themselves to the fact that they would have to give up on most of their “normal” dreams. After all, there was hardly anything about a relationship between two males that entailed any normalcy. But if by some miracle of fate- or a cruel trick of nature, JaeJoong couldn’t be sure- some powers from the heavens decided to grant them their paramount, most unreachable wish, then who was JaeJoong to question his luck?

The rest of the trip was spent in a somewhat tense contemplation, and he couldn’t help a sigh of relief from escaping his lips when the bus finally got to his stop. He quickly made his way out, hoping to buy himself more time. His watch told him that he still had an ample amount of time to discuss things with his lover before YunHo had to leave, and with today’s events he knew it was eminent that they discuss matters right away.

His steps were halted, though, when a barrel of a man blocked his way. “Kim JaeJoong?”

“Uh, yeah. Who-”his words were quickly curtailed as his arm was grabbed. The man was by no means gentle, and JaeJoong couldn’t help the slight grimace that expressed itself on his face.

“Come with me, someone wants to see you.”

YunHo let out another heavy sigh. For how many times, he wasn’t sure. He’d lost count at eight. Worry was evident on his features: creased forehead, eyebrows furrowed, a slight frown on his lips, fingers restlessly fidgeting.

I knew I should’ve gone with JaeJoong to the hospital.

He had called his lover numerous times, but he wouldn’t pick up. What’s taking JaeJoong so long in the hospital? He just wished it wasn’t anything serious. JaeJoong should know where he is, he had left at least three voice messages on his phone and he’d even stuck a post-it note each on their front door and refrigerator, just in case.

JaeJoong, where are you?

“Where are we?” JaeJoong demanded for the nth time. But like his past inquiries, this one was met with silence.

The man halted from dragging him as they arrived in front of a door, and suddenly hands were shoved in his pockets.

“Hey, give me my phone back, bastard!” JaeJoong reached for the barrelman’s hands, but his actions were rendered fruitless as he was promptly shoved inside the room.

“What the fuck? Let me out!” JaeJoong was about to ram his shoulder to the door when a voice spoke.

“Sit down, boy.”

JaeJoong didn’t know why, but the sight of YunHo’s father sent a forbidding feeling to settle at the pit of his stomach. Forcing in a deep breath, he turned himself around to face the man. “Thank you, Mr. Jung. But you can say whatever it is while I’m standing.”

The older man just smirked at him, as if he could see right through JaeJoong’s fake calmness. “Are you sure? This is going to be a long conversation.”

“Well then, let’s save this conversation for another time, shall we? I have somewhere else to be at the moment.”

JaeJoong was about to turn and leave, but the tone of his voice kept him where he was. “I said take a seat. Don’t make me repeat myself, Kim. You won’t like me when I’m upset.”

As if I like you otherwise. He dragged himself into a seat and snapped. “So? I haven’t got all day.”

“Tsk tsk, hasn’t you mother taught you any manners?” The man relaxed more into his seat. “Then again, growing up from where you did, I wouldn’t blame you.”

He had to grit his teeth before he could answer. “Just get to the point already, and spare me the chitchat.”

“Leave my son, and I’ll give you anything in exchange.”

He let out a short laugh. This conversation seems familiar. “I didn’t think you were this stupid, Sir. Its your son that’s leaving for Boston today.” He said, voice dripping with sardonic amusement.

“Don’t play dumb with me, boy. You know full well what I am talking about.”

They engaged in a brief glaring contest, before JaeJoong broke it to once more look at his watch. Goddamnit. I’m going to miss YunHo’s flight! He knew he had to leave, but the ‘conversation’ was far from over.

“I’m not going to leave your son unless he leaves me first. I’ve told you that before. Now unless you work on that, these conversations are pointless. ”

“What makes you think I’m not working on that?”

“Then what are we having this conversation for in the first place?” God, YunHo’s father really is stupid. If only JaeJoong knew.

“It looks to me that you’re the one that’s stupid, Kim.”

YunHo’s father had been hot on his heels, trying to make him leave his son, ever since the man had learned of their relationship. And he couldn’t think of any other way to make him see some reason, “I love your son, Mr. Jung.” His voice held desperation in it, a fraught attempt to make the man realize that JaeJoong wasn’t what the man thinks him to be.

“Aren’t you confused, Kim? My son isn’t my money.”

JaeJoong just shook his head in surrender. The man was too narrow minded. “I don’t think so.” He shrugged his shoulders. “YunHo isn’t green.”

Again, he moved to leave. And once again, he was stopped when the older man placed a briefcase on the table between them. He opened it to reveal bundles of cash, neatly stacked to fill the case to the brim.

“Filthy parasites like yourself don’t deserve money like this; God knows what you would do with it.” He leaned forward to push the case towards JaeJoong, making the younger man’s face scrunch up in disgust. “Take this money and never show your face in Korea again.”

“As far as filthy parasites go, I believe you have three of those hidden from your wife’s knowledge. You might as well just give this to them.” He moved to get up. “I really have no more time for your nonsense. Have a good day, Mr. Jung.” I hope your dick doesn’t fall off.

“I know where to find your family, Kim. Don’t forget that.”

JaeJoong’s heart gave a lurch at that, but he didn’t turn around. He wouldn’t give the man that satisfaction.

Shit. YunHo barely had an hour left before he had to board the plane. He hasn’t left his post to get his luggage scanned and cleared, in fear of missing JaeJoong. Shit shit shit shit. Where is he? He looked from left to right, slowly scanning the place to look for even the shadow of his lover. When he saw no sign of the other man, he released yet another string of curses. He stood up, and lugged his bags towards the departure area.

He was ten steps away from the passenger’s entrance when, “YunHo!”

“DongHae?” He looked behind the other man, hoping to see JaeJoong.

“He’s not coming.” The other boy stepped in front of him, panting slightly. He pulled out a crumpled white envelope from his bag and handed it to YunHo. “I have something for you, though. Its supposed to be from JaeJoong.”

His friend’s words only served to plant more confusion on YunHo’s thoughts. “A letter? Why? Where is he?”

“I dunno, dude. He gave this to me yesterday and asked me to give it to you before you go. I had class, though. And I almost forgot, so…”

“Yesterday?” What is DongHae talking about? He opened his mouth to ask just that, but a smooth voice over the speakers announced that he really needed to go.

“That’s your flight?” YunHo nodded. “Go. Just read the letter, it might answer your questions.”

They shared a brief hug, and YunHo made his way inside. When his friend was safely behind closed doors, he flipped his cell phone open and dialed a number.

“DongHae?” A low voice on the other end of the line answered. “Have you done what I told you?”

“Yes, Sir… please…”

The man laughed in satisfaction “Yes, DongHae. I assure you your mother will get the best treatment from the best doctors in Seoul.”

“Thank you, Mr. Jung.”

Running as fast as his legs would allow him, JaeJoong made his way further inside the airport. He cursed himself again for forgetting to take his phone from the barrelman before he ran away from YunHo’s hypocrite of a father. Locating the flight schedules, he stopped and frenetically scanned the digital board for YunHo’s flight. There it is! Boston!

“Fuck!” JaeJoong groaned in frustration, not noticing the weird stares he was getting, or the offended looks some old people were throwing him. His mind could only register one thing. YunHo’s flight had gone.

He dropped to his knees on the floor, uncaring of the pain that shot through his knees. And there, he let his tears flow.

YunHo...

Is it just me, or does the lj-cut really does use single words? i mean, i'm sure i used four words for the cut text, but only one appeared... oh, well! i told you guys its random! lol
