Just to keep this on top, in case people hadn't seen it, and to add the info that Fiver is
hazelrah1:
Anyway, the main point of the entry was this, from
mithluin:
As you may know, ALS (or Lou Gherig's disease) is a fatal, degenerative nerve disorder. Basically, you don't want to get it, especially not when you're a mom in her 30's.
Melissa Kern, who has been an active member of the Tolkien fan community for many years, was recently dianosed with this disease, and has 3-5 years to live. There is no cure. While the news is very difficult for her family, her husband wanted to do something special for her.
He would like her to be a hobbit extra in the upcoming Hobbit movie(s). Casting extras certainly hasn't happened yet, but he has started a petition already, so that something can be worked out with New Line or Del Toro.
As Fiver, Melissa has posted on TORn (
The One Ring.Net) and is a member of
Arms of Middle Earth, a Tolkien group from the Southeastern US. She attends Dragon*Con and other conventions, and has dressed up as a hobbit for these events. It would be a dream come true if she could be in these movies...because she might not be around to see them when they do come out in 2010/11.
Visit the website, and add your name to the petition, please. It will help the studio to see that this woman does have the support of the fan community. This is *not* a protest-against-XenArwen petition, nor is it asking them to change anything about how they would do the movie. It's just a request to make someone's wish come true.
Project Fiver Please feel free to pass this information along.
Edited to add that Project Fiver has been contacted by the production company, and it looks as though things look favourable. The petition is closing, and a guestbook on the website will be opening. Now we just have to hope that
hazelrah1/Fiver will be healthy enough to make it out to New Zealand.
