Prothesis was the custom of laying out the dead so the relatives and friends could view the body and express their condolences before the funeral.  Such scenes appeared on vases and larnakes, or ossuaries.  At a find from Bronze Age Tanagra, two women are shown mourning a dead child.  In the scene below, mourners lament the passing of a man.
