I've pinched this from
darth_tigger - I'm rather late doing it but got here at last! I love these music memes and this one is beautifully simple - You put your library on shuffle and then write the first twenty (or however many before you get bored) down.
(And if you're reading this in facebook and I've tagged you, it isn't because I want you to do this, it's just because I thought you might be interested! No pressure! *g*)
So here goes!
1. How Wonderful - Dave Bilbrough
This is on a set of 3 worship CDs I bought in Manchester ages ago when I went there on a day out with
carolynp and
nicolap. I haven't actually listened to any of these songs for ages, but should do so more often as they do me good and make me smile. This one is bouncy and reminds me of the sort of church worship I just don't get to do any more, and really really miss!
2. Mancunian Way - Take That
Ooooh I love this one. Love Take That post-Robbie Williams! And as I went to uni in Manchester and the building I studied in was right next to the Mancunian Way, every time I hear this song, it takes me right back.
3. Music I Love - The Saw Doctors
I'm glad a Saw Doctors track came up because I've been listening to them tonight! I can relate very much to the lyrics of this song - he finds it hard to go out and relate to people, so he stays home with the music he loves! I spent a LOT of time at home listening to my music as a teenager and a student. It's still one of my favourite activities when I get chance.
4. Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John
What can I say? I love Elton John and this is one of my favourites of his! My itunes library is being very kind to me so far! This song has an energy behind it which makes me want to sing and dance (I won't, because it's half past ten at night and I have three children asleep down the hallway!).
5. West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys
Another absolute classic. I grew up with the Pet Shop Boys - this came out in 1985 when I was 13, and they are one of the few 80s artists to have carried on releasing music the last three decades and still sound fresh (Madonna and Kylie Minogue are the others I can think of straight away).
6. I Can't Run Enough - Dave Godfrey
I can't emphasise enough how much I love Dave Godfrey's music! Praise music for kids - but it totally appeals to me as an adult as well! This album (Amazing) was a gift to me nearly a year ago from wonderful friends, and it saw me through one of the horriblest times in my life and helped keep me sane. I can't help but join in with this song, and find myself doing the actions too!
7. Love Really Hurts Without You - Billy Ocean
I didn't even know I'd got this! It's off a CD that came with my mum's Daily Express! Classic disco bouncy pop! Makes me boogie in my chair in front of the laptop! A bit of fun. :-)
8. Jehoshophat - Don Francisco
Haven't heard this in forever! I do like Don Francisco's take on Bible stories, and his songs are very catchy. Tim and I went to see him live in Nottingham at some point between 1993 and 1996, can't remember exactly! I get the feeling I will be singing 'Praise ye the Lord, his mercy endures forever and ever' in my head as I'm going to sleep tonight!
9. Not Where It's At - Del Amitri
Nineties, I am guessing. I loved all the Del Amitri songs I heard on the radio, and bought their album on a whim, I think. I haven't listened to it much, but when I do I really enjoy it, and this song has to be one of my favourites. Good harmonies, good instrumentation, good beat - what's not to like?!
10. All For Leyna - Billy Joel
I didn't really know much Billy Joel apart from Uptown Girl, when I was a teenager, and then I went to Manchester and one of my friendship group was a massive fan of his. He taped the best of album for me, and I took it home over Easter and listened to the tape constantly. Actually, this song wasn't on that particular album, but I never listen to Billy Joel without thinking of Gary and wondering what he's doing these days!
11. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - United Co-Op Band, Crewe
Hurrah! Christmassy, and local! I love a brass band, and this CD of carols was bought for me by Tim the Christmas before last, at the Crewe lights switch on where the Co-Op Band were playing.
12. Science of Silence - Richard Ashcroft
Hmmmm. Well apparently this is on Now 54, but I don't remember ever hearing it before! It is reasonably pleasant; I probably should listen to it more often!
13. Maybe Tomorrow - Stereophonics
This is on Now 56, and this one I do recognise, though it isn't one I would have bought as a single. Background radio type music!
14. Like I Never Loved You At All - Take That
More Take That and this one is fab too. A proper ballad to shut my eyes and play the air drums too while singing along... is that just me? ;-)
15. I Want Love - Elton John
Lovely piano and his distinctive voice; this is classic Elton John and I love it. There isn't much more to say really!
16. She's My Man - Scissor Sisters
If I was to have picked a Scissor Sisters track to be in a definitive list, it wouldn't be this one! But I'm glad the band have come up because they are one of the very few more recent bands to really make an impact on me. Listening to the Scissor Sisters I get the same feelings I used to get listening to music as a teenager, and I can't explain it any better than that!
17. New Song - Howard Jones
I'm eleven again, listening to this! Perfect 80s pop and it never loses its appeal for me. It takes me back to a segment of my life that was so uncomplicated and clear - before adolescence set in, LOL!
18. Tell Her About It - Billy Joel
More Billy Joel - and this one was on the tape I had! I love singing along to it and bouncing along to the beat!
19. Say It - Voice Of The Beehive
Voice of the Beehive - soundtrack of my late teen years! I had two of their albums (maybe they only did two, I don't know!) and played them over and over again, really loudly, in my bedroom, singing along with every word! I still know all the words off by heart and can't help but join in. I love the pure sound of the instrumentation, and their clear voices.
20. All Things Bright And Beautiful - John Rutter
Oh my goodness. I was hoping for something really apt for number 20, and this couldn't be better! I used to sing in a Ladies' Choir, for years and years, since before I had any children at all, through three pregnancies and births (I actually used to take Two with me to the rehearsals when he was a small baby, and breastfeed him there, because he wouldn't stay at home and have an expressed bottle!), and then had to give up as the children got older and I had more commitments. I miss it terribly but it was the right decision to stop when I did. As a choir we sang a lot of Rutter, and this was one of my favourites. It's very poignant listening to it now, and remembering being one of those sopranos (though we weren't anything like the choir on this CD, hehe!)
21. Someone Keeps Moving My Chair - They Might Be Giants
OK, so I was stopping at 20. And then this came on next and I wanted to write it down because I love They Might Be Giants so much! I bought this album (Flood) when I was in the lower sixth, when Birdhouse In Your Soul was in the charts, and never regretted the purchase - every song is fab!
Now I am going to stop because otherwise I will go on all night! I've loved doing that. And the above list is a reasonably accurate reflection of my music tastes I think - I'm sad that no Dire Straits, Genesis or Queen made it into the list, but we can't have everything! And the fact they aren't represented shows that this is a proper random choice and not contrived in any way!
