They met, but the timing wasn’t right
She has her reasons and he has his
They’re both confused so they decided to part ways
She wants him to wait,
He said he will whatever it takes
Years later, they saw each other again
But too much time has passed
Too late to make it work
Lesson? People change, so does the heart
Sieze the moment for in truth,
Nobody waits forever…

“Tegoshi Yuya desu, yoroshiku onegaishimasu,” 16 year old Tegoshi Yuya said as he introduced himself. He bowed politely in front of his classmates and looked back at them as they scrutinized him carefully. He was used to this feeling, this feeling like you were a specimen under observation, like he was an unknown being that was suddenly thrusted into their own world. He was used to this feeling because he felt this way every time he had to transfer schools.
“Class, please be nice to him, he just moved here in Tokyo,” their adviser said. His classmates nodded their head, some due to reflex eventhough they really didn’t hear a thing the teacher said.
“Tegoshi-kun, you may seat at that empty chair beside the window.”
Tegoshi nodded slightly and walked towards his chair. He heard the whispering his classmates shared as he was passing by. He didn’t care. He was used to this too. He learned not to care long ago.
“Hi! I’m Masuda Takahisa,” a young brown-haired boy spoke up beside him as he took his seat.
Tegoshi nodded curtly in acknowledgement but not really wanting to talk with him at the moment. He has more things in mind that he wanted to think about.
“So, you’re new here in Tokyo huh?” the boy asked.
“Yes,” Tegoshi replied, irritation seeping through his words.
Masuda seemed to have sensed the irritation in Tegoshi’s words and decided to keep quiet. He didn’t want to force the new comer to warm up to him. He looked at him, eyes full of concern, wondering what’s wrong with him as he looked outside the window, his eyes blank, expressionless. He sighed as he looked back in front, wondering what’s wrong with him too. He’s concerning himself too much about things he really shouldn’t meddle with. But then, he felt as if somehow he should know him better, to be friends with him, to protect him if he could. He scratched the back of his head in frustration as he glanced towards his new seatmate again.
Tegoshi Yuya… Masuda thought and then the softest gust of wind blew Tegoshi’s hair away from his pretty face and Masuda knew he was in love.

“So, do you like sports Tegoshi-kun?” Masuda asked.
They were in Gym class and everybody was outside in the field, shoes muddy just from walking to the center of the soccer field. The boys were excited but the prospect of kicking the stupid rolling soccer ball left the girls impatient and moody. Masuda was excited too since he loved all kinds of sports and it’s already been a week and Tegoshi was starting to warm up to him little by little. Just yesterday, Tegoshi nodded at him when they saw each other on the street.
Tegoshi looked at Masuda curiously, wondering where all this hyped up energy of his is coming from. Everytime he would see him, he would be smiling like crazy, like nothing in this stupid world is bothering him. And his laugh, his laugh is slowly driving him crazy. It was as if he was truly, honestly happy and that nothing but now was important to him. It was contagious. Him and his cheerful outlook, it was slowly getting to him.
“Yeah, I do,” he replied as he watched Masuda stop dead in his tracks in front of him and almost laughed as he saw him look back at him quickly and shouting in pain as he almost dislocated his head from his neck. “Tegoshi!!! That’s more than just a one word sentence!!!” Masuda exclaimed rubbing the back of his neck, totally happy that Tegoshi gave him a more then one word reply. Tegoshi couldn’t help but smile.
“Uwwwaaahhh!!! And you’re smiling now too!!!” Masuda continued to gush at Tegoshi making him smile even more. “You look pretty when you smile,” he continued on then slapped his hand over his mouth, eyes wide in shock that he actually said that. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that, no, of course I meant that. I just think that you’re pretty when you smile. No!!! uhm…” Massu said as he struggled with his words. Tegoshi smiled even more at the sight of a flustering Masuda, he looked kinda cute.
“It’s okay, I’ve been called pretty many times before,” he said then walked pass Masuda who immediately stopped trying to say the right words.
“Ne!!! Now that’s just more than three words!!! That’s already a long sentence!!!” Masuda said as he laughed and tried to catch up with Tegoshi who was grinning widely now. Masuda saw his smile and felt his whole being getting warm. It was the first time he saw him smile like that, and it made him feel special, like he was actually someone in Tegoshi’s life.
“You should smile often ne?” Masuda said as he walked beside Tegoshi, genuinely happy eventhough his brand new expensive shoes were getting all muddy. He didn’t care how much he spent for those shoes, as long as Tegoshi stays happy like that beside him.
“Maybe I will, if you promise not to leave my side,” Tegoshi said while looking straight ahead but not missing Masuda’s reaction of almost tripping on his own feet and the dropping of jaws.
“You mean, we’re friends?” Masuda asked, still not believing that what was happening was true and not from his imagination.
Tegoshi nodded slightly and smiled as he saw Masuda grin like a child given his favorite lollipop. He knew that starting from today, everything won’t be like it was before. He knew that starting from tomorrow, he won’t be lonely anymore.
“Ne! Ne! You can call me Massu ne?” Masuda suggested.
“Massu…” Tegoshi repeated, liking how it sounds when he said it.
Massu smiled as Tegoshi said his name, it sounded so sweet when he said it. “Erm… and I’m gonna call you… Tesshi? Will that be okay with you?” he asked.
Tegoshi just nodded because their P.E. teacher spotted them talking and told them to do 30 push-ups.

“So, who are you going to ask out for the dance?”
Tegoshi stopped flipping through his magazine’s pages. Massu was sitting on a chair in front of his computer, back facing him.
“No one,” he replied immediately because he really didn’t have any interest in going to the damned ball in the first place. It was just Massu who persuaded him to go using his irresistible puppy eyes complete with a cute pout and a quiver on his lower lip every now and then.
“Sou ka,” Massu said, still facing the wall of Tegoshi’s bedroom. He went there to work on their assignment in which Tegoshi gladly helped him out and somehow rain started to pour heavily again and Massu was currently stranded in Tegoshi’s house.
“Why did you ask?” Tegoshi asked as he resumed scanning his new magazine while finding a more comfortable lying position on his bed.
“Nothing really, just curious,” Massu shrugged as he faced the computer beside him, taking hold of the mouse and clicking randomly at the screen. Not really knowing what to do or how to ask his friend out.
Tegoshi yawned and peered at his friend who was still clicking randomly at the computer’s screen. “You know, you should pay for that if you manage to break it by clicking randomly at it,” he said and smiled as Massu abruptly stopped what he was doing.
“You should just stay here for the night. It’s getting late and the rain looks like it’s not going to stop anytime soon. Let’s just call your parents ne?” Tegoshi suggested as he stood up from his bed and grabbed his phone. Massu remained to be silent as Tegoshi dialed his number on the phone.
A few rings and then a moshi moshi was heard. “Hai, This is Tegoshi Yuya, Masuda’s friend. He’s here at my house right now and I think he should just stay here for the night because the rain is still pouring quite heavily. It would be unsafe for him to travel home now,” Tegoshi said through his phone and smiled at Massu who was just watching him talking to his parents. “Hai, wakarimashita, I’ll take good care of him, Ja!” he said and clicked his phone off.
“Maa… your mom allowed you to stay here,” Tegoshi said as he laid down on his bed again, sleep beckoning him.
“Erm… so where will I sleep?”
“On my bed you dummy, where else? Or do you want to sleep in the living room?” Tegoshi asked as he buried his head on the pillows.
Massu gulped and starts to consider sleeping on the sofa instead than sleeping beside Tegoshi. It really wasn’t so bad, he just thought that maybe he couldn’t control himself anymore and might do something he will totally regret later on.
“You can use my pajamas if you like. They’re in the closet if you’re not comfortable sleeping in those clothes,” Tegoshi suggested underneath his blankets, his sleepy eyes drooping.
“Thanks,” Massu said as he got up from the chair and approached Tegoshi’s wardrobe. He opened it carefully and found a pair of pajamas on top of a pile. When he looked back at Tegoshi, he saw him fast asleep, breathing oh-so softly.
He didn’t know what came over him, but the sudden wave of tenderness he felt made him approach the bed and stroke Tegoshi’s hair away from his face. He watched him sleep peacefully, chest rising up and down slowly, his hands clutching the blankets loosely. He knew he wouldn’t be able to see something more beautiful than this, he now knew what angels look like when they’re asleep. Masuda smiled as he heard Tegoshi sigh in his sleep and snuggle closer to his pillows. He then left a small fleeting kiss against his forehead, quite afraid to wake the other up but always knew in his heart that he wanted to do that.
He returned to Tegoshi’s room minutes later, he decided that a quick shower before going to sleep might help him sleep better and then forgot about the time. He opened the door slowly, hearing it creak and holding on to his breath as he watched Tegoshi’s sleeping figure shift on the bed, not wanting to disturb him and wake him up.
He managed to get in the room and slip on the bed without really bothering the other one. He laid on the bed with his back against Tegoshi’s, the room now dark because he really can’t sleep with lights on. He heard the bed creak and Tegoshi shuffle in his sleep and took in a quick breath as he felt Tegoshi’s arms around his waist. Did the gods really hate him so much to test his self control right now? He thought as Tegoshi started to snuggle closer to him now, his warm breath against Masuda’s neck, prickling.
“Massu… you smell so nice ne?” he heard Tegoshi say and Massu continued to pray to the gods to stop this test right now because he knew that he would fail miserably.

“What do you mean that you love me?!” Tegoshi practically screamed.
“I don’t know!!! I love you!!!” Masuda repeated his earlier confession.
They were now standing under the shade of a huge tree somewhere hidden in the school grounds. It’s where they usually hang out if they wanted to get away from all the noise and people. There, they felt that they were alone, that nothing could really bother them. And it really was a special place, that’s why Masuda thought that it would be the perfect place to confess.
Tegoshi looked incredulously at Massu, half-mad, half-happy that he felt that way. Because in truth, he knew he was falling slowly for the boy too. He crossed his arms in front of his chest and chewed on his lower lip, a habit of his that normally would mean that he was irritated or frustrated or something in between.
Massu knew about this habit and he immediately knew that he made the worst decision in his entire life. “I’m sorry, I really shouldn’t have said that,” he apologized and lowered his gaze on the green grass under his feet.
And then he felt it, soft lips against his own. It really wasn’t something extraordinary, it was just a simple kiss with no tongue whatsoever but he felt as if the world disappeared around him and all he could revel on was this feeling. This feeling of extreme happiness inside him.
And then it was all over, the world was back again but he was panting. And Tegoshi was pressing their foreheads together, eyes looking directly at his, his expression unreadable and it frustrates him to not know what that kiss was for.
“I think I love you too,” Tegoshi whispers against his lips and then presses them together again and fireworks started to explode inside Masuda’s head.
“But I can’t be with you,” Tegoshi softly said when they pulled apart.
“Why?” Massu’s voice croaked out.
“I have to leave, we’re moving back to Osaka in three days,” Tegoshi answered as he curled his hands against Massu’s, liking the warmth he felt there.
“Stay with me,” Massu said, voice desperate, eyes almost brimming with tears threatening to fall. He kissed Tegoshi’s hands, “Stay with me…”
“I can’t, I have to look after my mom. I can’t leave her alone Massu…” Tegoshi said, kisses Masuda again and wipes the tears that started to fall on his face. “Don’t cry… please don’t…” he said and Massu thinks that this is the most ridiculous order he got since he was a child. He rarely cried and when he did, he doesn’t want to stop.
“I want to be with you. I’ll move to Osaka too if I have to,” he says as he cupped Tegoshi’s face and kisses the tip of his nose and lips.
“You can’t Massu… please, just wait for me,” Tegoshi says, his heart breaking as he sees this young boy break apart in front of him, because of him. “I’ll be back, I’ll come back for you, just wait for me…”
And Masuda nods and promises to wait for him no matter how long it takes and they share another kiss as the rain starts pouring again.

“Massu… you should go out more often!!!”
26 year old Masuda looked at his friend and starts to doubt his choice of friends. Yamapi was a good guy, but honestly, he likes to party out all night at clubs and picks up random girls along the way.
“I don’t want to, I just want to rest,” he said as he continued to put his things inside his bag. Office hours were over and it was time for them to go home but his friend here wanted to go clubbing instead.
“Maybe, you should go with us just this time Massu,” Koyama piped up as he stood next to Yamapi who grinned widely, glad that someone was on his side. Koyama was a good guy too, except that he was a huge play boy and a well-known host at night.
Masuda sighed in defeat and both Yamapi and Koyama cheered in victory. Finally, they were able to drag their friend into their nightly activities and show him how fun it really was.
“So what are we doing here again?” Masuda asked. They were seating at a corner of a club, a variety of alcoholic drinks in front of them. They were in casual clothes now and Masuda barely recognized his friends in their outfit. They looked like some big time Hollywood rock stars with personalities that shouts out sex.
“We’re waiting for friends,” Yamapi said as he took another drink, eyes squinting through the crowd, trying to spot the friends he was talking about.
“Do you know them Kei?” Masuda asked his other friend but immediately regretted doing so as ha saw his friend lip-locked or rather tongue-locked with a gorgeous looking girl beside him. Masuda just rolled his eyes, wondering what evil spirit possessed him to agree in going to this.
“Ahh!!! There they are!!! Oi!!! Ryo-chan!!!” Yamapi shouted out loudly while waving a hand over his head. Masuda saw a short black-haired man approach their table along with two more companions but he couldn’t really see their faces because of the smoke that covers them.
Koyama slowly pulled back from the make out session and told the girl to leave, promising to meet up with her later and smacking her butt as she walked away.
“Guys, this is Ryo-chan and Shige, they’re both from Osaka and I met them here a few weeks ago,” Yamapi introduced the two to Koyama and Masuda. “Koyama Keiichiro, you can call me Kei,” Koyama said and promptly shook hands with the new comers. “Masuda Takahisa,” Masuda said as he reached to shake hands with them too. Both Ryo and Shige nodded in acknowledgement.
“Ahhh… we would also like you guys to meet our friend,” Ryo said as he pulled the other man with them to view. Masuda gasped in surprise, he knew him. He could never mistake him for another.
“Tegoshi Yuya desu,” he said as he bowed slightly.
And then the whole world stops for the second time in Masuda’s life as they locked gazes. He knew that Tegoshi recognized who he was. And Masuda felt like he couldn’t breathe properly anymore.
“Something wrong Massu?” Kei asked concernedly.
“I’m fine,” Massu answered as the new comers decided to make themselves more comfortable and started to settle down on the seats as well. Tegoshi sat beside Masuda and he forgets how to breathe suddenly.
It was awkward, really awkward to be seeing each other again. And in a place like this too, where all people really cared about was getting laid by the end of the night. They weren’t prepared to meet each other again like this, where all things seemed to off, when all they could see are imperfections in their own appearances. Fate must hate them to make them meet like this again after years.
“Massu? Something wrong?” Yamapi asked when he noticed that his friend suddenly went more than the usual quiet.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he said as he tried to laugh the uneasiness off and wiped off the sweat forming on his forehead. And then a brush of fingertips that seemed to electrocute Massu’s being and he almost shouted out in surprise and looked to his right. It was still the same, those brown orbs he loved so much, it was still the same. “I missed you,” came out from his mouth before he could even stop it but it really didn’t matter, he knows he wants him to feel the same.
Tegoshi smiled and curled his delicate hands around Massu’s, it was still warm like he remembered. It was so long ago, but somehow it still feels right, like his hands belonged there, like it was made to fit perfectly inside Massu’s hands.
There was no need for more words because their eyes say it all and they knew that night, that everything will fall back into place. Their shared gazes and smiles didn’t go unnoticed but their friends didn’t really care anymore because they too are sharing something more adult oriented with their girlfriends.
