It’s his 21st birthday today. It isn’t a weird feeling to grow up a year older but he never gets excited about it. He prepares for the day like any other day and finds himself at school an hour and a half later.
People kept on greeting him a happy birthday and he smiles at them genuinely. It wasn’t the smile he perfected to fake when he was still a teenager. It was a genuine smile this time because he’s genuinely happy to be where he is right now, studying law in this school, standing in front of these people and his fans, and singing with such a wonderful group of friends.
Upon arriving at the Jimusho after his classes, a swarm of kouhais starts to flock his side and give him armful of gifts. He thanks them and tells them to do their best and they beam their smiles at him, chubby cheeks, missing tooth and all. Tegoshi greets him with a hug when he walks in their dressing room that almost knocks him down the floor. Shige pats his head and says thank you then all he could remember was Massu prying Tegoshi off of him.
Koyama arrives a minute later and hands him a parcel. Shige beams and hugs his best friend, it was the new novel he had been waiting for but hasn’t had the time to buy yet. Koyama blushes and says it’s nothing and Tegoshi screams out “Member Ai!” before proceeding to bear hug the two. Massu just rolls his eyes as he tries his best to pry off his boyfriend from the two.
Yamapi arrives at the scene and joins the hug before Massu could even stop it. Shige laughs as he saw Yamapi drag Massu into the hug. Massu joins in and all of them laughed heartily at the display of affection for each other. There was just one person missing and it would’ve meant a whole lot to him if he would be there for him right now.
Nishikido Ryo is on tour right now. Yes, on tour with his other group Eito. He’s so far away from Tokyo right now that he hates it so much. It’s Shige’s birthday today. Its Shige’s fucking birthday and he’s supposed to be celebrating with him but instead he’s stuck backstage with 6 goofballs.
“Ne, Ryo? What’s wrong with you?” Yoko asked.
“Iie, betsuni,” he replied. Gods, he wanted for this concert tour to end already.
Subaru laughed and so did Murakami. “It’s Shige’s birthday today Yoko, didn’t you know?” Subaru said. “And so?” he asked. “Ryo’s being bitchy because he misses his law student,” Murakami teased. Ryo glared and hissed and Murakami cowered in fear. “Ahhh!!! He’s turning into Sousuke!!!” he shouted. Ryo shakes his head refusing to believe that Murakami is still afraid of him eventhough his drama ended weeks ago.
Shige’s bedside clock ticks slowly, but too fast for his own liking. It’s two minutes before midnight and Ryo haven’t called him yet. He misses him. He misses him so damn much and with that thought in mind, he buries his head on his pillow and screams out in frustration. He never knew starting out a relationship with the older man would result to this. He never expected that he would long and crave for Ryo like a little girl who wants her teddy bear. And then he left me after just two weeks to go on tour! He bitterly thought and stares at his clock again. One more minute to go and his birthday would end already.
Okay, 30 seconds to go… 15… 10… 8… 4… 3, 2, 1… and Shige’s breath catches when he feels his cellphone vibrating beside him. He almost drops his phone when he sees Ryo’s name flashing on the screen and he fumbles as he flips it open. “Hello?” he croaks out and he cringes at how his voice sounds. Real suave Shige he says to himself as he hears Ryo chuckle at the other side.
“I miss you,” Ryo purrs making Shige blush and he’s embarrassed by this because he doesn’t know when this is going to stop. He doesn’t know when the time will come when Ryo would stop affecting him this way like a little girl being caught looking at her crush. “I missed you too,” he whispers and he wanted to smack himself for not coming up with a better line. Sometimes, he thinks, Ryo makes him look like an idiot too. When he stares at him sexily and he loses all his common sense and his intelligence, sometimes, Ryo could affect him like that too.
“I’m sorry I’m not there with you,” Ryo says, loneliness and regret evident in his voice. Shige almost wants to reach out and hug him. “It’s okay Ryo. I know you’re busy, it’s fine with me really,” he says. He hears Ryo sighing and Shige bit his lip because he’s too wrapped up in the emotions of missing Ryo and he doesn’t know the right words to say.
“I miss you Shige, I miss touching you,” Ryo whispers again and Shige couldn’t hold back the moan that escapes his lips. It’s almost as if Ryo was there beside him, his breath hot against his neck and Shige arches his back just from the fantasy. “You aren’t touching yourself are you?” Ryo asks, with a hint of amusement in it. “No…” Shige answers shakily, his hand gripping tightly on the sheets to keep him from touching himself. “I promised you I’ll wait for you right? I’ll just have to control myself till then,” Shige adds, his breathing turning into short gasps for air. His imagination is running too wild now and hearing Ryo’s voice like that doesn’t help. “Just one more week ne Shige? Just wait for me for one more week and we’ll be together again,” Ryo said. Shige nods even though Ryo couldn’t see him and whispers ‘I love you’. “I love you too Shige… you better sleep now okay? You still have classes tomorrow,” Ryo says thoughtfully. “Oyasumi Ryo,” Shige says and Ryo just laughs and gives off a small chu on the phone. Shige smiles and closes his phone.
Shige opens his eyes the next day and he smiles fondly at the memory of his talk with Ryo on the phone the night before. He opens his phone to check for any new mails and his heart starts to beat faster when he sees Ryo’s name on his phone’s screen again. Shige smiles when he finishes reading Ryo’s message to him. Ryo could be so sweet and cheesy sometimes. But he couldn’t help but look forward for his return when they could finally be back in each others arms again.

Summary: Shige's birthday wish is... ?
Every year passes by quickly for Kato Shigeaki. Sometimes, he even finds himself surprised that he has grown a year older, and a tad bit higher. His bedside clock goes off telling him it was midnight and there goes Koyama's message again, arriving exactly at 12 o’clock midnight every year. Shige sighs, knowing fully well that his other groupmates' messages will arrive any minute now. And they did, one by one, all messages greeting him a happy birthday, managing to get a small smile from him. As he finally got Ryo’s birthday greeting, he shuts off his phone and stretches out on his bed.
He sighs and wonders if tomorrow will change, if tomorrow, something surprising will happen for his 21st birthday. He was quite tired of how every year, his day would always be the same. He wanted excitement but it seems like excitement was avoiding him. He finally shuts his eye and calls it a day and feels sleep washing over him.
The next day, he arrives at the Jimusho quite early and the usual greetings started. He smiles at them, and thanks them for their greeting. He happily accepts too whatever his kouhais gave him as a present. It was pretty rare to get something from them since he’s not an almighty senpai like Yamapi or Jin, so he thought it would be a crime not to accept these things.
He finally arrives at NewS’ dressing room and saw it empty. He sighs as he dropped his bag on an empty chair and stares at his surroundings. He sees the latest issue of a magazine and decides to read it. There was a birthday corner greeting Jin and Massu a happy birthday. He was mentioned too and he places the magazine back to where he found it.
The door clicks and Shige whirls around and sees Massu holding out a cake, a birthday hat on top of his head lopsidedly. Tegoshi follows shortly after, balloons floating behind him and throwing around confettis with Koyama and Yamapi belting out a happy birthday song. Shige smiles he was happy at the effort of his friends to make a surprise for him like this.
Massu joins in on the singing and Tegoshi does too, making the song a wonderful new rendition and Shige claps at the end of it. “Otanjoubi Omedetou Shige!!!!” they all greeted at the same time and Massu almost shoves the cake to his face. “Make a wish!!!” Tegoshi suggests and puts a party hat on for Shige. Shige smiles and the image of his smiling band mates remained in his mind as he closes his eyes and makes his wish.
His band mates cheered as he blew out the candles and Massu shouted an ‘Itadakimasu” before proceeding to eating the birthday cake. Everyone just laughs and Tegoshi pouts playfully while he went to eat alongside his buta.
“Aren’t you a little too old for this?” Ryo asks as he sees the scene in their dressing room. He was dreading that he would see something like this when he heard the excitement in Koyama’s voice yesterday. He was telling him a surprise party for Shige and he knew he should expect something like this.
Koyama smiles sheepishly as Ryo proceeds to walk towards the birthday boy. “Happy birthday,” he mumbles and Shige smiles as a small package was shoved in his hand. He unwraps the gift and lets out a small gasp of surprise as he sees what was inside. It was a small silver ring and it was beautiful.
“I like you Kato Shigeaki, I’ve always liked you,” Ryo confessed as he looks away from Shige, his cheeks burning from the embarrassment. Shige grins and held Ryo’s face and turns it gently towards him. He places a soft kiss on the older man’s lips and smells something like cinnamon and peppermint. “I’ve always liked you too Nishikido Ryo,” he confessed as he leans his forehead against the shorter man. Ryo smiles widely and dives in for another kiss as the rest of the members cooed at the sight of member ai in progress.
And Shige knew that his birthday wish for an excitement in his life came true in the form of Nishikido Ryo.
