I can't remember how I arrived on that slideshow about muxes ("men who consider themselves women and live in a socially sanctioned netherworld between the two genders.") from an area of Mexico where Zapotec is still spoken and things such as this three gender system survived colonisation.
And when I read the following sentence, it was quite moving to find more acceptance, lack of discrimination and love in such an area than in our so called "civilized" occidendal countries (who probably took great amusement from slaughtering lots of their zapotec ancestors a few centuries ago, yurk)
"Mr. Martinez is a construction worker who speaks Zapotec but little Spanish. He and Alex have a loving relationship, and when asked about having a muxe son he replies: “It was God who sent him and why would I reject him? He helps his mother very much. Why would I get mad? God sent him for both of us. Why would I get mad?” "
