We had a mix up because of how we copied some dates down and we ended up not spending a night in Paris. It ended up being a really dirty place and we were hustled by 3 drunk men within our first hour there before 10am. We were fine with leaving. The only train out we could get reservations for with our Eurail passes wasn't until 8:15pm so we had time to master the Paris metro and go a half hour away to see the Eiffel Tower. We ate sandwiches there and walked down to the tower to walk under it and sit in the park it overlooks. We got bored quickly and went back up to the other end so we could watch all of the African street peddlers avoiding the cops and hustling everyone. We found a street performance consisting of five guys break dancing and that provided entertainment for a while.
Paris had a surprising amount of Africans walking around in their traditional robes and colorful garments. There were more homeless people there than any place we have been yet. I felt like I had to keep a hand on the zippers of my purse everywhere we went. I'm glad we were able to get a train to London so quick!
We were surprised to find out that we had a pretty extensive customs process to go through in Paris. We went through security and filled out border control papers and our luggage was scanned. We got our passports stamped twice there! The UK is the only country that has cared about who passes through their borders so far.
I started to get a migraine when we were riding through the chunnel to the UK. By the time we got there I was nauseous and my head was throbbing behind my eyes. We had to walk through the station, find an ATM to get pounds, and then go downstairs to the tube and buy tickets for our 30min subway ride. It was very unpleasant feeling how I did carrying a 26ish pound pack on my back... I had to lay my head on Tyler with my eyes closed on the subway ride and he told me people were looking at me funny the whole time. They were probably scared I was going to throw up on the train (and so was I!).. but I made it out and also walked a mile to our hostel and we finally got there at 11pm.
I like it here. We're on a pretty residential street that looks like the place the Dursley's live in Harry Potter. :D We have free wifi in our room so we'll be using the computer a lot!
After we found out how hard it was to get train reservations in and out of London we were worried we wouldn't be able to find a way to leave! There are only limited slots for eurail pass holders making it even more difficult. We got lucky and found a train to Brussels on the 25th but that is a day later then we were planning on leaving so we have to skip staying the night in Brussels and go straight to Amsterdam when we arrive there at 7pm. After than we'll finally be back on our regular schedule. It feels nice to be staying in one place for a little while now. Especially one that speaks English (even if some people are so British they're hard to understand...)!
