Rhinestones

Can someone explain what it is with Americans and rhinestone? OK, let me qualify that - specifically, American tourists; in Edinburgh; around Festival time; mostly women, but men not excluded.

It's not that I have a prejudice against rhinestone. It has its place. On wedding dresses, ballroom gowns, and that nifty little cocktail number. On the former it may be luxuriant; on the latter, sparingly, please.

The question occurs because I was walking home across Edinburgh this morning after a night out. I took in Princes Street at 9 am - just as the hotels were scaling - because I've come to like shooting candids of tourists. They have an appealing diversity, even within the same country and culture.

But there they are - rhinestones, that is. On stone-scrubbed denim, on shirt lapels, on handbags. Everywhere.

Of course I'm aware of the Good Ol' Boy connection.

But here's the disconnect.

You'd think, I mean you'd think, the sort of people attracted to Edinburgh around Festival time would, very specifically, NOT be the sort of people who'd consider rhinestone as a daywear accessorising option.

Am I missing something?
