Sara is the party-girl.
While twin Gilly had her head down, working towards her BSc at uni, Sara was drinkin', tootin' and generally being disreputable. And worrying her parents no end. Believe me.
But these things have a way of evening out. By 24, she was managing one of the bigger club venues in Edinburgh. Then she took a sideways step and became cashier at one of the few casinos in our douce capital. Cashier? I was sniffy until she tartly pointed out she was handling up to £300,000 on a busy night. And authorising - or declining - credit extensions up to £2000.
So. Successful. But in a sub rosa kinda way.
What I didn't reckon is the sheer grit of the girl. Her long-time partner Glynn is a sound engineer and willing co-conspirator in her hectic lifestyle. He has a niece, born two years ago with Spina Bifida. Unbeknown to all round here, Sara has been providing respite one day a week to one very harrassed mother.
It gets better. She started training last October. On Sunday, she ran 26 miles and 385 yards. Four hours 22 minutes. She raised £1500 for Spina Bifida. And then she drank champagne and smoked a cigarette.
I am so proud.
