Chakotay waited until he was alone before he collapsed onto his knees and vomited onto the carpet. They were all gone. All of them. And he had lost her. Oh God, he had lost her. He had so many painful regrets his mind wasn’t sure where to begin. They should never have tried the slipstream attempt; they should have waited, he should have stopped them. His whole body was numb. He hadn’t been able to look at Harry after they had finally reached Earth. Her greatest wish and he had fulfilled it without her. He could still hear her voice echoing in his head - after dessert - could still see her looking at him with a look in her eyes that he had convinced himself wasn’t hunger. He vowed there and then he would never forgive himself for having lost her. For having let her go.
For having left her quarters before he had found out what “dessert” really meant.
