SPN Episode reaction 10x15

It took me a while, but I finally managed to watch the new episode today :).

Episode 10x15 - The Things They Carried

I didn’t know a whole lot about this episode, other than that Cole was coming back, so I had no real expectations for it.

I thought it was a fairly solid episode, though it didn’t jump out at me as being great. It wasn’t one I was glued to the whole time and I probably won’t rewatch it.

Like other recent episodes, it felt more like old-school SPN, which is good, though I could have done without the worm/parasite stuff… anything like that just squicks me out (I have a fear of things like that which live inside people), so I had to look away anytime it was on the screen :P.

While this season is definitely better than S8 and 9, I just have this feeling like something is missing from the episodes each week… I feel the writers are just scratching the surface of these characters and situations but aren’t delving right in - I would like to see more exploration of Cole as a character, I want him to learn more about the Winchesters and really understand what happened when he found Dean as a demon - I kind of want Cole to come across the SPN books and to really get an understanding of who Dean is and what he has done. It all just seems to have been swept under the rug and we’re expected to just buy that that one conversation/fight between Dean and Cole a few episodes ago cleared everything up.

We’ve just had this big episode with Cain and the Mark, Sam’s ominous comment about Dean not being fine at the end and then suddenly it’s like nothing happened (other than a brief mention of the mark), with the next episode opening with Dean seemingly fine and joking about porn :S.

I notice there was yet again some actor recycling in this episode - the guy who played Kit was also Scott Carey, the psychic kid who was killed by Gordon Walker at the beginning of 2x10 Hunted.

Things I liked:

  • An appearance from Cole is always good, though I still wish they had done more with his character
  • It felt more like an older episode of SPN… felt more back to basics

Not so much:

  • The weird ‘Then’ opening sequence… it was all over the place and made no sense… it was like they couldn’t think of anything to link this episode to, so they just showed us a montage of monsters and the fact that the boys usually have to figure out what they are hunting.
  • Dean’s tasteless porn jokes at the beginning… he’s more mature than that
  • The boys carrying on as if the previous episode never happened (SPN used to be so good at emotional continuity and now it’s basically non-existent)
  • The worm/parasite thing
  • The lack of depth to the character interactions, particularly Dean and Cole. Like there’s no real tension there, no emotional debates over them working together.
  • Sam’s reaction to having to kill Kit at the end… it seemed over the top and unnecessary - I’m sure it’s not the first time he’s had to kill someone he was trying to save, so why is it suddenly such an emotional crisis for him?
