Who's getting a Cat? I'm getting a Cat!

this afternoon!  I want her to be vegan, but she will not be vegan tomorrow*, because I don't know enough about vegan cat diets yet, and keep running into the most idiotic things about cats and veganism while trying to learn about the subject.

I think it'll help my psychological state to list them and rant about them. you probably don't want to ( Read more... )

I really like the idea of getting non-factory-farmed, by-product meat based food. I don't like the idea of making a cat vegan. I don't think it would be good for the animal.

Anyway, yay for cats! There should definitely be pictures until I bicycle my way over to meet her :)

I never say "natural". I said "healthy". Humans are "naturally" carnivores, but can healthily live as vegans. But the cats I have known/heard of who were vegan were not healthy. If it's possible to do it without hurting the animal, great. If not, you're gonna have to kill a few fish. People who try to make their animals vegan at the expense of the animals' welfare incur my wrath, but from reading your earlier rant about obnoxious websites that tell you to starve your cat, you're not one of those people.

One more time: I /never/ said natural.

"I said "healthy""

actually, no, you didn't.

"I never say "natural"

true, but you did say you "don't like the idea" and you "don't think it would be good". those statements are, like blind associations of "natural" and "right/good", unsubstantiated claims... your statements quoted above are, as i said, "the same sort of vacuousness" i've seen when reading about people saying cats are naturally carnivores, etc. the above rant was regarding people wasting my time with that sort of empty preaching, when i'm looking for information.

No, they are not "blind associations". My opinions are based on a few empirical instances, which I did not immediately list, but which include Lola and Eric's cat. For some reason, when I said "I think it isn't good for the animal", you appended "because it's not /natural/" to my statement. I didn't say that. I intended the statement to mean "I think it isn't good for the animal because the few vegan cats my friends have had were not healthy." If you could show me empirical instances of vegan cats being healthy, I would change my mind. You didn't bother to do that yet. Instead you started attributing things to me that I never said. That's obnoxious. It makes it difficult to have a reasonable conversation.

1. the main issue: "I think it isn't good for the animal because the few vegan cats my friends have had were not healthy." fair. you intended the statement to mean that, and i shouldn't have assumed you were saying something else. nonetheless, you didn't say it until your most recent post.

2. eric and lola's cat should *not* be seen as an example of a vegan cat, but of an abused cat (the abuse may also be in terms of diet, as i don't know what they fed her, but often, if not always, with vegan cat food there are enzymes or nutrients you should give them as a supplement) that also happened to be vegan, i'd say. i'm pretty sure you know this too, but if not, ask around about her. are there other instances you are referring to? i ask because i am gathering information. wayne's cats are well taken care of, and are vegan.
