"You're going to be here for another 20 minutes."
Kate looked up from her feet to see Mark sitting in the chair on the other side of the room. Her legs were sticking out in front of her, her black and red high-top Chucks next to her knees.
"And why's that?"
Mark gestured to her shoes. "I had a pair of high tops once. Those things take like 20 minutes to put on."
Kate frowned and picked up one of them. "Uh, I don't think so." She easily slipped it on her right foot.
"Oh." Mark slouched back into his chair. "I never thought to loosen the shoelaces."
Rewind two hours.
"I'd offer you some of this, but you don't smoke the green, so I doubt you'll want this."
Kate looked up from the magazine she was reading. Mark was sitting on the edge of his chair, scraping a bowl out with a safety pin. Small black pieces of resin flaked onto the coffee table.
"I need a paper clip." He got up and walked into his room at the end of the hall. Kate went back to the magazine.
"I hate this bitch," she said when he came wandering back. Kate flipped the magazine so he could see the picture, but he didn't look up. He sat down and continued with his work. She sighed and continued to read the magazine.
Rewind 12 hours.
"I'm so glad we became friends."
Kate looked away from the TV screen into Marks eyes. "Why's that?"
"Otherwise I'd never have seen this movie."
