DIY projects are great for wedding planning!
They are inexpensive, fun, and they really get you psyched for the whole bridal ordeal (as if I wasn't already). I'm making quite a few items for my wedding, because--well, I don't have $50 grand for this thing, plus I want everyone to see it and think, "Yep, this suits them."
Lance seems to have lost my camera cord for the time being, otherwise I would have some photos for you, but some of my DIY projects include...
1. Miniature sand art kits that we are making to give out as favors. I intend to buy these favor boxes ready-made:
(Source) But we are filling them with miniature glass bottles that I bought on
eBay, then hot-glued tiny bows onto; one bag each of blue and white sand (I bought those little jewelry-making resealable bags, then put a teaspoon of sand into each), and one handmade paper funnel.
2. Paper ornaments to hang from the ceiling. I went off this tutorial:
(Source) But I think mine are coming out cuter. ;) I plan to make about 50 of these and hang them at varying heights from the rafters at the Olin Pavilion. So far, I think I have about 17. They take a LONG time, but they're worth it! The scrapbooking paper I bought for this purpose is also serving double duty, because I've been using the scraps to construct my favor funnels!
3. My bouquet--originally, I just wanted a hand-tied arm bouquet of callas. I think they are lovely, but I decided something so conventional just wasn't for me, so I lifted an idea out of one of my bridal magazines. It suggested taking some birch branches and wiring a few white flowers to them, a la this:
(Source) This is a cherry branch, and I plan to use magnolias, tulips, or gardenias, but you get the idea. Of course, the bouquet toss is out, but how many girls out of high school really enjoy that tradition, anyway?
5. Our escort cards, thanks to Martha Stewart's unceasing wisdom (seriously, until this process, I never appreciated her), will be little cocktail parasols, stuck into a tray of sand, with people's names attached, like this:
(Source) Assuming Thony does come through (though it's looking doubtful), these would be adorable with the Costa Rican food.
4. Of course, the mother of all my DIY projects, the centerpieces! I'm sorry to keep reminding you, but I seriously need about 6 dozen bottles, so PLEASE don't throw yours away if you live in my area! I will give you a dollar or two per bottle if it's one I can use!
Anyway, some of my bottles will be filled with colored water and one flower, some will have those little glass pebbles, some will hold sand, some...well, some, I'm not sure yet what they will hold! I'm thinking of laminating the table numbers onto one empty bottle per table, what do you think?
Do you have any DIY projects that you are working on right now? If you have planned/are planning a wedding, what items did you make yourself?
