Brain Dump

The furnace in my office has broken. It's negative 3 in Chicago right now with wind chill. We have a few teeny space heaters working overtime and I'm wearing a long sleeved shirt, sweater, pashmina, another sweater, corduroys, long boots, wool socks and leg warmers. Shana has her puffer coat on and the fur trimmed hood up. She looks like an Eskimo.

Yesterday I had to train a parent on crisis intervention and deescalation while my boss watched. Soooooo nerve-wracking. But once I started looking at him as a teammate and resource rather than a supervisor/judge, the training picked up this great energy and we really rocked it. The experience reminded me that attitude and perception are a huge part of success.

We got our confirmation for our honeymoon itinerary. I'm a little nervous (ok a lot nervous) because we decided to use our airline voucher from American and book a separate round trip flight from Chicago to LAX and leave for Thailand from there. That move saved us about 1200$, but it means that if our South China Airlines itinerary messes up, we might miss our American flights and vice versa. We were so focused on staying within budget for this trip that we may have made things a bit risky/complicated. But I think if we hadn't economized on the flight we wouldn't have been able to stay in the lovely cottage on Koh Samui, and we are SO looking forward to that.

It's been on both mine and Carey's minds that we've been saying all along that we wanted to wait to start a family until after our honeymoon and, well, we've finally booked our honeymoon. It's so scary and exciting. I'm in the older range for motherhood and I may have endometriosis, but I'm also a very healthy person with a very fertile family history, so I have no idea how this is going to play out. Not since I left NYC for Carbondale to start grad school does something feel so big and unknown.

I forgot to mention the party fail this past weekend. A coworker of mine, Alyce, was having a two-part birthday celebration in northern Chi (Lakeview). Carey and I drove up there and had dinner at this highly rated hole in the wall across the street from the part-two bar. Dinner was great, and it was BYOB, so I walked down the street and got some Corona, which made the meal festive and cheap. http://www.aztecadeorogrill.com/
However, when we went across the street to Smart Bar (just before the cover was about to jump up in price at midnight), we couldn't get a hold of anyone until our mutual friend Nick texted to tell us that Alyce was pass-out, throw-up drunk and they weren't going to make it to Smart Bar. At that point, Shana was parking outside and we quickly let her know that she'd be wasting her money on the cover. Carey and I ended up meeting Shana at the low-key pub next door while we drank very cheap Miller lites and shared the cupcakes I'd brought for Alyse with the rest of the bar. Lemonade out of lemons, right?
