Prop 8 just legislated legal discrimination. I have never been one to feel strongly about political crap. Personally, I find it tiring and my energy is best spent improving my life. Well, I did, until this.
I feel the passing of this proposition will indeed detract value from my life. Half of my friends cannot legally be married to someone they love. Not only that, 8 supporters lowered the value of marriage by voiding the "love" component: now you only need to be male and female.
Many of my friends and I volunteered, donated, and rallied. I saw so much support for NO on 8. What happened here?
When I worked the phone banks for No on 8, most people who protested did so either because of their faith or because they were certain it would be taught in schools. That stupid, thoughtless teacher in San Francisco didn't help. I hope she is proud to have provided "yes on 8" people with ammo for their most effective claim. She couldn't have possibly thought that they would mention permission slips. or that voters would go through the research to check the validity of such claims. YES ON 8 propaganda worked. Three weeks ago at the phone banks we tallied: 220 people voting no, 47 undecided and 61 yes. Our call sheets were tailored to the undecided voters. What happened? with numbers like that, even if undecided turned yes, "No!" should have prevailed.
I also find one other factor in these "yes" votes: people who didn't understand what it meant. One customer said to me " they are gonna do what they're gonna do. marriage is just a piece of paper anyway". Uhm, no. it's not like that.
How many people are thinking like that out there? Probably a lot. And when this comes around again ,THOSE individuals are going to be the ones that need to be reached. They need to understand that marriage is not just a piece of paper. People need to understand their freedom of religion is not compromised by allowing others to have equal rights within the state. A church is not going to be forced to marry gays anymore than Synagogues have to perform Catholic mass. The right to religion does not include the right to oppress others. Children? do all married couples have kids? are all kids part of a family with their mother and father? no. It was effective propaganda for 8 though, wasn't it?
If out-of-state money is going to fund discrimination in California's constitution, maybe we ought to think about limiting or all together eliminating campaign funding from out of state sources on California Constitutional Amendments (notice the limitation is restricted here). Why should out-of-state interests so heavily effect California's future? I do not believe 8 would have prevailed without the large amounts of out-of-state funding it received.
I do not beleive this fight can end until all are equal. It is not over. I will be there, calling, rallying, voting, talking to more people. Will you join me ?
I was perplexed that 4 failed and 8 passed. If fundamentalist value passed 8, then those same voters should have passed 4. Why is banning gay marriage more important than "saving babies" and "parents rights" and religion trying to ban all abortion? Because it's not just religion, it's general discrmination.
