It's been a freakish few days. It started with me getting ready to work at the luggage outlet on Friday and bashing my toe against the door frame while trying to step over the baby gate. It's not broken (I went to the ER on Sunday afternoon), but it hurts like heck and is pretty ugly looking. Regardless, I had to stand for 8 hours on Friday (and Saturday) while trying to convince people to buy luggage (luckily, no one rolled over my toe with one of the suitcases - that would be just my luck.)
Sunday morning we got up and started getting ready for church, but as sometimes happens, we got a bit of a late start. I felt badly about interrupting the service about halfway through it, so Paul and I just took Nathan to the nursery and played with him and chatted with a few of the other moms. We went to coffee hour to talk to a few people about our duties for the upcoming Christmas Fair, etc. Then we left to go get my aunt for lunch. Paul had left the lights on in the van, so the battery was dead. Paul went back into the church and got someone to come give us a jump. Paul hooked up our cables (CORRECTLY) and Wayne started his car. (*I need to interject here that they were cheap Wal Mart cables that we got as part of an emergency roadside kit.) Wayne started his car, and the dome light in the van started to flicker a little - then I happened to look out the front window and saw smoke coming off the cables. Paul ran out and told Wayne to kill his engine and tried to remove the cables. By this time, the plastic grips on the handles had melted and Paul burned himself trying to get them off (not badly). There is smoke filling the car, and I'm unstrapping Nathan from his seat and getting him away from the car. There's smoke all over, people from church are running towards me asking if we need to call the fire department. As if on cue, the cables burst into flame. Thankfully, Wayne and Paul were able to get the fire out and get the cables off without any real damage to themselves or the cars. Someone else eventually stopped by with an SUV and a REAL pair of cables and started us right up. It was pretty hairy, to say the least.
Yesterday, I had an interview in the morning for a new seasonal position, since my original job was given away when I cancelled my assignment to go to the audiology interview. Luckily, I didn't have to spend the entire 2 hours there, and I got a 1st shift position doing monogramming, which sounded kinda fun. Shortly after I got home, I got a call from the temp agency. The first choice turned down the audiology job and they wanted to offer it to me now. Doesn't that just figure?! So, this morning, I called and accepted the audiology office job and turned down the seasonal job. I really hated renigging on my committment (again), but the other job has the potential to be permanent (it's a temp to hire position) and pays a bit more. That little extra will probably be the difference between getting a new car (we're down to just 1 again) or not, and being able to buy a house. That alone made the decision fairly easy. (Not to mention being able to use my Masters degree on occasion.) Of course, this means I also will have to pay $700 to renew all my licenses for next year, but we'll find a way.
That's the skinny on our past few days!
