I think the fandom's love for Sookie/Eric is one of the reasons I'm really not in fandom for this show; I haven't read the books but as it's been presented on the show so far, the pairing seriously squicks me, so even if Sookie/Bill doesn't last I will be rooting for Sookie/Alcide or Sookie/random guest character or Sookie/her hand over Sookie/Eric.

That's such a perfect way of putting it. In some ways it almost reminded me of some Arthur/Merlin modern AUs I've read - not in a bad way, and not because they're the same characters at all, but just in terms of one guy being definitely interested but extremely wary while the other one's bringing the charm, which made it all feel a bit surreal. And I think it says something that Merlin fanfic is my go-to comparison here, because when it comes to actual TV, you so rarely see this much attention paid to the beginning of a relationship between two people who are not straight and are comfortable with that going in. You'll occasionally see a character going through the process of realizing they aren't straight when they thought they were, or references to an established relationship that's pretty much in the background, but I don't think I've seen anything else where you get the UST and the flirting and sort of dancing around each other, seeing how this could work, (but without the gay crisis - I mean, there's nothing wrong with the coming-out story itself, but it shouldn't be the only one there is, like once you're an openly gay person you're just in the background and no one cares about your relationship drama any more) all that, the way you do all the time with straight couples.

...And, uh, wow, that's really tl;dr, sorry. But yes! I really, really hope they can work it out, both because Jesus seems lovely and Lafayette really deserves something good in his life for once, and because it would be damn nice to see something like this work out well on TV.
