So Mad Men is back, and this week's True Blood was the first of the season to have me actually looking forward to next week. WHEE.

+ It was incredibly cathartic when Tara bashed Franklin's head in, gotta say. I know it's been played for laughs a bit, but that man terrorized her and squicked the hell out of me in the process. I kept wondering why she didn't grab one of the blades off the wall, something that'd take Franklin's head off. I'm guessing because of that, he'll somehow be back. Important thing is, she got the hell out of there, came up with a plan, carried it out and saved Sookie in the process. ILU TARA.

The season's been so disempowering for women so far, Tara especially. The way they've been handling her has bothered me in comparison to Sookie. The politics are a little skeevy because Tara's been framed as too tough to need saving/tough enough to take it (even Franklin alluded to this two eps ago) and is repeatedly ignored in her peril whilst dudes have been flocking to save Sookie, successfully and unsuccessfully, all along. This ep makes me feel a bit better because in the end, they both ended up having to save themselves/each other, and some dudes in the process. And it was kind of awesome.

+ I ship Tara/Alcide already, I'm pretty sure that wasn't intended but I don't care. ~one look was all it took~

+ I know I'm risking being judged for this, but ... I'm kind of on Team Bill right now. He doesn't really appeal to me personally, and I've always found him paternalistic in his treatment of her, but at the end of the day he seems to be the one Sookie wants despite all manner of other guys that are around her all the time. She doesn't even see them, Eric included. To me Eric/Sookie seems one-sided at this point - maybe that'll change, idk. Speaking of which, be more transparent, Eric. :P

+ Jesus/Lafayette are ADORABLE, but I'm sad at how it left off this week. I hope this isn't the last we see of the two of them.

+ The actress playing Lorena is FANTASTIC. I guess she always has been but this is the first week I've actually marveled at it. I want to see her in other things.

+ Still bored with Sam's storyline - and Jason's. Jason's has the potential to get interesting whenever we find out what's up with the girl, but now we know what's going on with Sam, and ... yeah, still bored. :/ It's disappointing, he's always been one of my favorites.

+ Jessica is my favorite. Most adorable bloodthirsty vampire ever. It's constantly delightful watching her try to deal with herself and other people. Although, clearly she's headed for some serious trouble, you can't go chewing on customers at work. And Arlene cracks me up.

+ WTF was that with Sophie Ann? Since when is Eric more powerful than her? I don't buy his "lol I was just bullshittin'" line -- she had him dangling by his toes three weeks ago and now she's totally cowed. She looked fabulous, though. I hope she's back next week and I look forward to seeing what Eric's got in store for the King. Could be his allegiance will shift back to her once the magistrate's dealt with and he gets his revenge.

All in all, MUCH better this week imo. And finally a cliffhanger that has me dying for the next ep.

+ Pretty fantastic episode all in all. A lot of setup and exposition for the new agency/season but some good character progression for a couple of characters.

+ The new digs are SO MUCH DIFFERENT. But I like them, they're well-lit and slick and get a load of that logo. I was half-expecting them to still be in the hotel room/for less time to have passed. But I like this.

+ Roger's still a total ass; he's always been one of those characters the show has that progress will leave behind. He just had one-liners this week, all of them either ablist or racist. Oh, the 60s. We'll see what goes down for his character this season.

+ Somewhat relatedly, I notice that Carla is still taking care of Betty's kids, and that now Don has a new maid in his flat called Celia. I've been hoping that this season might be when Matt Weiner starts actually presenting characters of color in a substantive way, which I think is an oversight on a show set in the 60s that incorporates everything that was going on back then. All I can say is they haven't started yet. We did get some mention of freedom riders and the three civil rights workers who got murdered that year, but in terms of incorporating an actual character and giving them a story, looks like it might be too much to hope for. :/

+ Pete - didn't have much this week either, but it was kind of cool seeing him work with Peggy and Joey, the little unit they've formed - whilst trying to play with the big boys in the agency as well. A couple of characters are doing kind of a balancing act this season. I lol'ed at him sucking up to the clients as usual.

+ Joan - fabulous, naturally, but PLEASE LET HER HAVE A SUBSTANTIVE STORYLINE THIS YEAR. I want her to leave her trifling-ass husband but it's so complicated and I don't know if she will.

+ Betty - I guess a lot of fandom will continue to hate her, but I've always loved her and always will - not so much as a person as a character. She's one of the most interesting ones on the show for me, so much a product of her time and so trapped in it, and part of what makes Mad Men one of the most feminist shows on TV right now. I look forward to more episodes that explore what's going on with her. I read a cool article recently that suggests Betty's another one of those characters history will leave behind.
I'm not crazy about her and Henry right now. Maybe it's because Don/Betty my dysfunctional OTP, but she still seems hung up on Don, and Henry's pretty obviously threatened by him. I'm kind of weirded out that they're still living in that house together when Henry was so bent on providing everything for her and the kids. And I'm still sad that she's left Don only to land in a similar situation. I LOL'ed at Henry's mom's advice, though.

I feel so bad for the kids. Sally's growing up so much! And clearly unhappy. :/ Betty's being pretty immature around them as usual.

+ Peggy was the highlight of the week for me. Planning and strategizing and being amazingly Don-like, professionally - she's taken so much from him and just run with it. There's such clear growth between last season and this one and I love how she's slowly becoming more powerful and secure. Her scenes with Don are GOLD as usual.

+ Speaking of Don - that was cool, seeing him struggle professionally for once and realize that he's running a business now and he's got to juggle those demands on top of being creative - his work and bouts of inspiration aren't enough to speak for him anymore. Also, his personal life is really freaking sad. Kind of ironic that he had no trouble landing women when he was married, but now he's paying women to smack him around. (I kind of think he's still in love with Betty and that they deserve each other, BUT WHATEVER).

+ ETA: LOL @ the True Blood chick from last season being on Mad Men. Crossover tiem.

I think that's it! Great episode, looking forward to this season a lot.
