the Ewok

Internet, meet Ewok:

The one in the middle?  That's Ewok.  How did this little mop of fluff come to reside in my house?  Let me start from the beginning.

Friday was a weird day.  It was wonderfully only like 82F with a nice breeze off the ocean.  Very strange for July.  I had a great night at work for the most part.  Usually we do 4 or 5 tours.  If we have to do 5, the fifth one is at 10pm.  10pm tours are no fun at all, and it was a bull shit call on the part of the person working the ground that I even had to do one.  I should have been sent home, but I didn't, and it sucked, but oh well.  The 4 tours prior to that were awesome.  Anyway, when I finally got home, at midnight, I got out of my car and there's this fluffy mop of a dog on the curb in front of my house.  He was just sort of standing there, peeing on cars.  I walked up to him, fully expecting him to run away like most small, loose, badly socialized dogs do.  Instead, he wagged his tail and let me pick him up.  I walked up and down the street with him in my arms, looking for anybody that may have lost a small dog.  But it was late and no one was out.

I put him down on our path and he followed me to the front door.  Ken came outside by then to see what Jet and Papu were barking about.  Ewok dog greeted Ken as politely as he had to me.  He was obviously someone's dog.  He was sweet and had been groomed not too long ago.  We couldn't just leave him out there.  So Ken went in and got the big dogs.  We left Ewok loose, I took Papu while Ken had Jet.  Papu took one sniff of him and went "Ew... gross."  Jet, who I fully expected to be a small dog inhaling douche, did about the same thing.  Little dog was of no threat to him, and was therefore allowed to live.  We walked up and down the street to let everyone get used to each other.  The big dogs were still leashed, and Ewok just followed along.  I said "OK, everyone gets along, lets go inside." and Ewok dog took off up the path, straight to the front door.  OK well... he's decided he lives here.

He's completely housebroken.  He's meshed seamlessly into our household and our schedule like he's always been here.  He was somebody's dog.  Was.  Despite being recently groomed and a trained house pet, he's not fixed, he was full of fleas (he hates baths btw), he has patches of fur missing from scratching, and he's very skinny.  I think he was dumped.  Or owned by an older person that didn't have money to take care of him.  Maybe he was dumped, or let go, or escaped.  Either way, he's here and he's safe now.

We plastered the neighborhood with fliers.  I somehow managed to walk all 3 of them and carry fliers, poo bags, and a staple gun.  That was interesting.  I talked to anyone I saw outside and no one recognized him.  I put 2 ads on CL.  Saturday morning we went straight to the vet to get scanned for a chip, with no such luck.  However, I do have a waiting list for homes for him.

Yeah, as well as he has integrated himself here, I don't think he needs to stay.  If we get a third dog, it needs to be something with energy that can tousle with the big dogs.  Jet and Papu want nothing to do with him, and vice versa.  They allow him in their space.  There has been no growling or disagreement of any kind.  But they intimidate him I think, and he really doesn't want to play.  And did I mention Papu was disgusted?  Oh yeah... she's pissed.  Not another dog taking attention from her.  Oh no.

I also no nothing of small dogs.  I'm pretty positive he's a Shih-Tzu.  I mean, how often does he go to the groomer?  How do I clean his face that he's always getting dirty?  Plus he was obviously not well bred.  He looks old on the outside, but he has extremely white, young looking teeth.  He would also need to be fixed, and I think he has some other health problems.  He has a bad eye too.  He doesn't eat much, but I can't afford the extra vet bills right now.  There's a really nice gay couple down the street that are first in line.  They loved him instantly.   extendedtrot 's mom is a Shih-tzu person, and she offered to take him.  If neither of those pan out, my barn owner runs a Shih-tzu rescue.  He is getting very attached to me, unfortunately.  He sleeps on the floor by my side of the bed, follows me all over the house, and lays down under or next to wherever I sit.  Oh yeah, he won't get on furniture either.  I've tried to put him on the bed or the couch, but he always jumps down after a minute or two.  He even sees the big dogs up there, and he won't do it.

So... I think it was fate that I had to work later than I wanted to on Friday.  And I really am calling him Ewok.  I mean seriously... it's uncanny.
