Chapter 5
Jin waited with Rui outside as Manabu walked through the doors to their practice room. His eyes found the other’s crestfallen form outlined against the bright sunshine streaming in through the big windows. He walked up to him and turned him around carefully, then led him over to the couch.
Yuuto’s form was rigid and shaking, his breathing came out in sharp, strained huffs and chokes. He did a brave attempt of not falling apart, he did his absolute best.
Manabu could see every fiber in the younger trying to hold it together and he let him try, but he knew it wouldn’t work, it was one of the times where you simply had to let go unless you wanted to suffocate to death. It was a bit what it sounded like the other was doing, but Manabu couldn’t do anything else than being there. He continued his stroking motions as the other bent forward and started to cry, his whole being shuddering with sobs.
Manabu closed his eyes and leaned back in the couch, dragging the taller man back with him into a firm embrace instead. “It will be okay.” he said quietly. "Everything will be okay."

At the same time Kazuki walked quietly by the vocalist’s side out through the entrance of the building. Byou stopped by the smoking area just outside the doors and took out a cigarette, leaning against the sunlit wall. Kazuki mimicked the action and took out a cigarette too.
Byou lost most of the tension in his body after a couple of inhales of the toxic substance he loved so much. He tilted a little bit to the side and his head leaned against Kazuki’s shoulder, grateful that he was there.
Their cigarettes became shorter and then finally extinguished in the ashtray in front of them.
“Do you wanna come home with me?” Kazuki asked.
Byou only nodded, Kazuki took a light hold of the other’s arm and guided him to the left towards the parking lot and the other followed his move. “Then this way, I have my car.”
Kazuki kept looking at the older in the corner of his eyes during the drive and didn’t know if he should be worried or not. The other didn’t quite look upset, but he didn’t look especially happy either.
When they entered Kazuki’s apartment a while later Byou walked straight to the couch and lay down, then took one of the cushions and hugged it close. Kazuki followed him a few moments later and a warm feeling filled him up seeing the vocalist cuddled up like that. At the same time he did worry though.
He understood that the other didn’t want to talk yet, so instead of hovering he walked into the kitchen and put out things to make a small breakfast. He guessed the other hadn’t eaten anything yet either.
Twenty minutes later he walked out in the living room with a tray holding two bowls of rice and fried vegetables. It wasn’t much, but at least it was food and it was tasty. It was the least he could do for the other.
Kazuki put down the tray on the couch table and nudged the vocalist’s shoulder gently. “Sit up.”
He obeyed and looked over at the table with sleepy eyes through his unstyled, slightly wavy hair. He still didn’t say anything, but he smiled gently at the guitarist when he received his bowl. At the same time Kazuki sat down beside him he took a mouthful of food and chewed and leaned on him. “This is really tasty.”
“Thanks.” Kazuki huffed.
They ate in silence, when they were finished Kazuki took out their bowls in the kitchen and put them in the sink. He put water in the boiler, took out cups and prepared for coffee.
A few minutes later he walked out in the small living room with two steaming cups and put them on the table. The vocalist had found his remote and was currently browsing through the channels on the TV. After a while they came across a kid’s channel where they showed a movie, so Byou stopped there.
Ten minutes later both of them had finished the coffee and was in a more comfortable position in the couch; Kazuki leaned onto the armrest with a pillow in his lap, and on top of the pillow rested the vocalist’s head contently. The minutes that past soon became hours, the movie changed into random series. It wasn’t until Kazuki started to get hungry again in the afternoon that he had any plans of ever leaving the couch. He could stay like that forever.
He stroke his fingers gently through the silky hair in his lap to get the other’s attention.
“Hm?” Byou hummed and looked up at him, his face was suddenly so close the younger’s heart skipped a beat.
“Do you wanna go out and eat dinner?” Kazuki asked after a few seconds of getting his mind back on track.
The vocalist smirked. “Only if it’s a date.” But the same breath as he spoke the words his smile vanished and his eyes became blank.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Byou said a bit more firm, why didn’t he answer the question?
“Because.” Yuuto said and released the vocalist again. “You were already in love.”
Kazuki observed him quietly, not sure what just happened with him. A barely noticeable frown appeared on the beautiful features, confusing the younger even more. “Byou…?”
“Oh yeah.” Byou said and looked up again. He drew his hands through his hair and sat up more straight, regaining his inner balance a bit more. “Yes, I’m hungry so let’s go.”
“There’s a newly opened soba restaurant nearby that I’ve wanted to try out.”
Byou stretched out on the couch, yawned loudly and remained in the position, slowly sliding down from the couch. “Sounds good.”
“What are you doing?” Kazuki laughed out, put his phone down and grabbed his arm in a try to keep him up on the couch. Byou chuckled and instead of aiding him in his try to keep him on the couch he did the opposite. He took a hold of the other’s waist and pulled him down to the floor with him, close to hitting his own head in the couch table.
“Idiot.” Kazuki laughed out and tried to struggle out from the grip, partly lying on the floor, partly on the vocalist. He felt his face become extremely hot as he struggled but the other didn’t let go.
Byou just huffed at him mockingly. “You’re too weak.”
“Or maybe you’re too strong.” Kazuki said and changed method, poking his fingers to the other’s sides. It proved to be a much more effective way since Byou wriggled and squirmed like some kind of worm, trying to fight him but he gave up soon enough. He laughed and rolled over on the floor, put kept a hand laying on top of Kazuki’s stomach.
It was a small connection between their bodies, but it seemed to just make the power of it more concentrated. Kazuki tilted his head and looked at the other’s profile.
Byou… Are you okay?
He would love to take that hand into his own at that moment, but he stopped himself. The other’s strikingly beautiful features in that calm expression made Kazuki calm too, although he knew well that underneath the calm was a storm. It was out of both view and reach, so far Kazuki didn’t know how strong and powerful the storm was, but yet he could feel it there.
“Can you do something for me?” Kazuki asked just a few moments later and looked up to the roof.
“Yeah.”
Kazuki looked to his side in surprise, the answer he expected was “What?” and not just agreement on the spot. It was a cute though.
“Thanks.”
Byou tilted his head and looked at him in confusion. “What you want me to do?”
“Later.” Kazuki said and smiled at him. “Now let’s go.”
Didn’t make much sense to the vocalist, but he just went with the flow.
It was a fresh autumn evening, but still warm enough to be comfortable. It only took them ten minutes to walk to the restaurant. It was a seafood restaurant and the food looked delicious which got both of them in a great mood. There wasn’t many people so it took them barely an hour, then they were ready to go again.
Kazuki went to pay for the food as Byou took on his jacket, then joined him.
“I don’t feel that great.” Kazuki said and pat his stomach as they were walking. “I hope the food wasn’t bad.”
Byou looked him over worriedly. “I feel fine though.”
“Hm.” Kazuki hummed and looked up at the star filled sky. It wasn’t as much stars as on the country side, but it was still pretty. He thought for a moment, then looked over to the other. “Do you look forward to the upcoming tour?”
“Yeah, it will be really nice.” Byou said and smiled. “I look forward to get away for a while, just the five of us.” He looked forward a great deal to get away from here.
Kazuki could understand that, but he still worried about the other and both his mental and physical state. He remembered as it was last week when they had a tour just after Rui had joined and it took a great toll on their vocalist. He was on the brink of collapsing by the end of every show, some of the shows he actually did but he still didn’t sleep or eat much which made the whole thing even worse. Kazuki really didn’t want either of them to live through that again.
A few minutes later they walked into his apartment, soon ending up in the couch again. Kazuki felt himself getting more and more shaky, waves of shivers and cold sweat hit him and he wondered what the heck was going on.
“Maybe there was something bad in your food.” Byou said and looked him over, seeing how pale he was also. “You okay?”
“Yeah, I just feel weird.” Kazuki said and sighed, but he rather not think too much about it because that made him feel even worse. “What do you wanna do?”
Byou shrugged. “Do you have a card game or something?”
“Yeah I think so.” Kazuki said and stood up. He disappeared into his bedroom for a while then came out with a little box, containing the cards. He tossed them over to the vocalist who caught them in the air.
Byou burst out laughing when he looked down at them. “You have Totoro themed cards?”
“Yes.” Kazuki laughed out. “I think a fan gave me them, don’t complain. They are cute.”
Byou sat in the couch and Kazuki sat on the opposite side of the couch table on a cushion. However, barely a few moments into the game Kazuki felt another wave of nausea, much worse than before. His hand darted up to his moth and he stood up and walked to the toilet with hasty steps.
Five minutes later he walked back to the living room, a towel hanging around his shoulders.
“There really was something bad with that food, huh.” Byou said and looked him over.
“Definitely.” Kazuki said and sighed. “Why do you even try new restaurants when there’s so many you know are tasty and for sure doesn’t make you sick?”
Byou huffed and pat the couch next to him in a gesture for the other to sit down. He complied and leaned back into the soft cushions. Byou pat his head a few times. “Feel better now?”
“Yeah.” Kazuki said and sighed.
They spent the rest of the evening watching TV. Kazuki was very grateful that he only had to empty his stomach once for his body to be okay. This happened to him once before, but that time was more severe.
“You do look much better now.” Byou said and smiled.
“I feel much better too.” He said with a grateful tone in his voice. “Remember that one time we all chose the same dish at that restaurant and-”
“Don’t remind me.” Byou said with a mortified voice. It was funny in a way though, because they had to re-book the hotel that night so they all could get a separate room. Sharing toilet wasn’t exactly working…
Wanting to change the tracks of his thoughts Kazuki spoke up again. “Byou…”
“Yeah?”
“About the thing I wanted before.” Kazuki started and Byou hummed. “Would you mind staying here for the night?”
“Not at all.” Byou said and smiled gently. “Why did you make such a big deal out of that? You got me nervous.” He laughed.
“Well-” Kazuki said. “It’s just so much going on, I thought maybe you would like some space or something.”
“I do want space.” Byou said quietly and looked tenderly at the guitarist. “I want space from everything going on, but the only way for me to get that space is being with you.”
Kazuki looked back at him and smiled happily. “I’m happy to hear that.” Inside his stomach clenched and tickled as if he just went flying down a steep hill on a roller coaster.
They spent a few more hours watching TV, then Byou started to fix the couch as Kazuki fixed something small for himself to eat; he was hungry again, no wonder.
“You think it’s okay you eat?” Byou asked as he walked into the kitchen.
Kazuki nodded and took a second bite from the sandwich “Yeah, I feel nothing weird in my stomach anymore, I’m just hungry.”
Byou took the liberty to make a sandwich for himself with the already taken out ingredients. Kazuki watched him, deep in thoughts. He wondered if the other really would be okay for the tour. It was not a long one, but no matter how you looked at, if you weren’t in top shape touring drains you easily. Kazuki remembered clearly how the vocalist could barely get through the last few lives of that tour a couple of years ago, and he was scared they were walking along the same road again.
Byou finished his sandwich first, he took out a bottle of water from the fridge and drank a bit and then handed it to the younger.
“I’m going to get ready for bed.” He said and stretched out “Is it okay if I take a shower?”
“Sure.” Kazuki said. “The towels are in the thingie next to the shower.”
“The thingie?” Byou laughed out. “What’s that?”
“Oh I forgot the name.” Kazuki said and tilted his head and it made him look ridiculously cute.
Byou only laughed at him some more, then walked towards the bathroom. He found the thingie, which was a simple cabinet but lower. Byou actually didn’t know what he would call it either, except for small cabinet, maybe. He took out a towel and hung it up on a hook next to the bathtub, then started to undress. He didn’t know what he should do about the whole thing. He felt much better now than he had done for a long time, but he was still drained, and he still couldn’t sleep properly. No matter what he did he couldn’t sleep.
The rays of water hit his face, then trickled down his neck, shoulders, waist and legs. He didn’t know what he should do with anything. He couldn’t stop thinking about what Yuuto had said about him and how he felt about Kazuki, mainly because he knew he was right. He had avoided thinking about it for so long, it was easier that way, but now he couldn’t stop himself. Why did it have to be so complicated…
Meanwhile Kazuki had changed into a loose t-shirt and more comfortable pants. He sat amongst the pillows and covers in the couch watching TV as he waited for the other to come out and soon enough Byou came out in only his boxers and the towel over his head. When Kazuki saw him he couldn’t stop himself from giggling hysterically.
Byou only grinned and plunged himself down amongst the covers and started drying his hair with the towel. They spend the rest of the evening talking about nothing at all important, it was over midnight when Kazuki went to his room and to bed. Both of them fell asleep within minutes, both with a smile on their lips.
