By the time they found the right building and ward, Andrej was glad he had worn sneakers, not heels. Tom had shed his jacket as their hurried walk had warmed them up, and Andrej was jealous, since he couldn’t do the same. When they got there, they were a few minutes late, but the receptionist was very nice about it.
“Oh it’s alright, everybody gets lost the first time,” she explained, and Andrej chuckled, smiling as they were immediately taken to speak with the doctor. Tom was out of his element completely as he followed Andrej and the receptionist to an office, where they were greeted by an older man who was bald on top.
“Ah, you must be Andrej,” he said, shaking hands with Andrej, then Tom. “And this must be the father,” he added, smiling.
“Um, Tom,” Tom said, then sat down in the chair beside Andrej’s after Andrej sat.
“So, Andrej,” the doctor said, nodding as the woman leaving shut the door. “Your case is intriguing to say the least,” he said, gesturing to some folders on his desk. “I’ve read all the notes I was sent and I’m astounded!” he exclaimed. He looked up and chuckled. “Although, I was confused for a moment when you entered. You are by far the prettiest girl I’ve seen in my office as of late, especially seeing as you’re not a girl at all.”
Andrej smiled. “Yeah, I get that a lot. I’ve basically gotten used to people thinking I’m a woman in public,” he said, shrugging. “At least now that I’ve had all of this to worry about I know why I look so much like a girl,” he said with a small shrug.
The doctor nodded. “Well, we’ll start today with a normal check-up. Or as normal as we can be,” he said with an understanding tilt of the head. “Then in a few days we’ve got you scheduled for a wide range of tests. I don’t want to keep you spending all day every day at the hospital though, so we’ve spread them out over two weeks. I’m sure you want to make the most of your energy while you can,” he said, and Andrej smiled, nodding.
“I’ve definitely felt better lately, so it would be nice to not sit around all the time,” he agreed.
“Alright, we’ll go to an examination room now and first, we’ll have the nurse take a blood and urine sample, we’ll do the abdominal palpation to check the baby’s position and growth, and then we’ll go ahead with the ultrasound,” he said, and Andrej nodded, standing when the doctor did.
Tom followed their lead, then followed them down the hallway as well. He sat on a chair in the corner while Andrej went into the bathroom to give the urine sample, then waited while the nurse drew Andrej’s blood for the blood test. Afterwards, they were taken to another room, this time with a table which Andrej sat on. “Tom,” he called, and Tom looked up. “Will you hold this?” he asked, taking off his sweater, revealing just a tank top under it. Tom nodded dumbly, taking it as he stared at Andrej’s middle. Before, he had just been a bit thick, but now, Tom could clearly see how his belly seemed to round at a certain point between his crotch and his belly button. It was more obvious that it was actually a baby and not just bloating.
Tom stayed out of the way while the doctor, as far as he could tell, just randomly pressed on Andrej’s belly in places humming and mumbling to himself, before nodding. “Well, for eighteen weeks, the uterus seems to be in about the right position. There is some variation, but your pelvis isn’t exactly the same as a woman’s. Although, you do have a more rounded pelvis than the average male, which can be attributed to your having both male and female organs,” he added, and Andrej nodded.
“They told me that in New York. They said it’s amazing my mum never got curious when I was younger or going through puberty and had me looked at. Honestly, though, as a single mum of two boys, as long as I wasn’t ill or nothing was wrong, she probably didn’t have time to pay too much attention to me not growing into a man as much as becoming a woman,” he joked. Tom couldn’t fight a smile at the idea of what their mother must’ve thought about him and Bill, looking back. He was pretty sure neither of them grew body hair until they were at least seventeen or eighteen.
Tom was drawn from his musing as they started up the machine on Andrej’s other side and a technician took over, allowing Andrej to pull his shirt up over his belly so that the doctor could start the scan. Tom was shocked, however, when he saw the image that was on the screen. It was a blurry, odd looking orange-ish colored series of lumps that almost resembled a foot. “Wow,” he said softly, unable to stay quiet.
Andrej, however, was staring with wide eyes and an even paler than usual face. “I wasn’t expecting…”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I meant to mention it would be a 3D scan,” the lady who was doing it said, smiling. “First baby, huh?” she asked, looking between Tom, who had stepped up beside them, leaning in to see, and Andrej, who was in shock. “They asked for this since it’s a few weeks early for the usual scan to tell gender, so this will make it a little easier,” she said, then smiled. “You could’ve been able to tell that just by looking at you, though,” she said, and Andrej turned, frowning.
“What?” he asked, still somewhat in shock.
The lady was still looking at the screen and making adjustments as she spoke, so she didn’t see his face. “You’re glowing. Most women usually glow their most beautifully just when they’ve stopped being sick and start feeling better,” she said, and Andrej smiled bashfully.
“Well… thank you,” he said, chuckling. “Glowing, huh?” he mused, and she nodded.
Tom hummed. “Oh, that explains it,” he said, and Andrej turned in confusion, which made Tom blush. “Well, when you got in the car, you looked really pretty for some reason. It was distracting how pretty you looked,” he admitted, and Andrej rolled his eyes. “I just didn’t want to say anything to make it weird.”
“Oh come now,” the technician said, giving Tom a stern look. “You should always compliment your lady,” she jokingly chastised, and Andrej cringed.
“We’re not- um-“ He shot Tom an awkward look. “We’re sort of just-“
“Friends,” Tom offered with an equally uncomfortable looks.
The technician looked suddenly embarrassed and turned away tactfully, going back to her task. Andrej just groaned and rolled his eyes, which made Tom fight a nervous giggle. After a few moments, Andrej cleared his throat. “What exactly are we looking at?” he asked, and Tom sighed.
“Thank God, I wasn’t sure what the hell there was on the screen but I didn’t want to seem stupid,” he said, and Andrej smirked.
The lady smiled. “Well, for now we’re looking at a thigh. We had a foot and a leg, now we’re at a thigh. I’m trying to find the angle to see what gender the baby is,” she explained. “You don’t have to know. If you want to look away, I’ll just note it for medical reference-“
“I- I want to know,” Tom said, surprising even himself.
Andrej looked uneasy, but nodded. “Yes, I’d like to know as well,” he said, shooting Tom a confused look.
Tom shrugged. “I just… curiosity,” he answered feebly, both of them turning back to the screen awkwardly.
After a few more moments, the lady let out a soft sound, then smiled, freezing the image. “Do you guys see what I see?” she asked, and Tom tilted his head.
Andrej raised an eyebrow. “A bum?” he asked, and the lady chuckled.
“Well, yes, it’s a bottom and then thighs here, and here-“ she pointed. “What do you see?” she asked, and Andrej tilted his head the other way, giving her a sheepish look. She smiled. “Alright, well, what I see is-“ she stopped and Tom and Andrej shared a glance, waiting for her to finish. She smiled at her own fun stalling, then laughed softly. “A girl,” she said straight out.
Andrej’s heart stopped. He felt his throat close and he just stared at the screen, finally figuring out what was meant to be the baby’s vagina, since he knew what to look for now. He was numb. His entire body felt both lighter and heavier at the same time. He glanced over at Tom, and wasn’t shocked to see Tom’s face pasty pale.
Tom then confused both Andrej and the woman by gasping softly with a jerk. “Holy shit… I’m- This is actually seriously… wow,” he said, staring in wonder at the screen.
Andrej smiled weakly. “A lot more real huh?” he asked, and Tom nodded mutely.
“Alright, well, I’ve got something that might make it just even more real,” the lady said, smiling like she knew something they didn’t. They both stared as she moved the wand around again, searching for something.
Andrej was the one that gasped this time, however, when the image she brought on the screen was of the baby’s face. “Whoa…” he uttered softly, eyes comically wide.
Tom could barely breathe. He had no clue what was going on inside his head, but his throat felt tighter than ever as he stared. “Is- is it sucking it’s thumb?” he asked, amazed at what he saw.
“Yes, she is sucking he thumb,” the woman said. “At this point, babies can move quite well. She’ll be kicking full on pretty soon. Also, she breaths in amniotic fluid to get her lungs and muscles ready for the motion. She even cries sometimes,” she said, and Tom frowned.
“Babies can cry in the womb?” he asked, and she nodded.
“Sure. No noise is made, obviously, since there’s no air, but her vocal cords are developing so, theoretically, if there was air in there, she could cry like she will when she gets here.” She pressed some buttons ignoring the two who were both lost in thought. “You know, I think she sort of already looks a bit like daddy,” she commented, and Tom felt his eyes bug out. She shrugged. “The nose, at least,” she clarified, not even noticing the shock the other two people in the room were in.

Tom was laying on his bed, still somewhat in shock as he stared at the picture that he’d received from the doctor, a print out of the ultrasound -the picture of his daughter- when his phone rang. He answered it automatically and heard Andrej nearly whisper his name.
“I think… that I’m going to call my mother,” he said weakly.
Tom swallowed thickly. “I think- I think I’m going to call mine,” he admitted, and Andrej made a strangled sound.
“This is real,” he said softly. “I- she’s- we-“
Tom cut him off, smiling as he stared down at the picture. “We have a daughter.”
Andrej laughed wetly. “God, I have a daughter, Tom. She’s- She’s pretty, don’t you think?” he asked weakly.
Tom smiled, nodding to himself. “Beautiful, even.”
“I’m going to keep her,” Andrej clarified, though Tom had understood well enough the first time. “I’m going to keep our daughter. She’s- it’s a real live baby. I knew it all along but- she has a face! She sucks her thumb, Tom.”
Tom sighed. “Yeah… I know,” he said, suddenly thinking of what the chances he would ever even get to see her when she was born. He had expected all along to, at the most, pay child support to Andrej. He never expected to see his daughter’s face or to hear that she had his nose. He wasn’t sure what he would even do if he did get a chance to actually be her dad. He knew nothing about children. He didn’t expect Andrej would want anything to do with him after she was born. At the same time, however, he wasn’t even sure why he wanted to be around suddenly. She was a baby. A real live baby, with a face and hands, but Tom had known that all along. He may not have had to face the reality of it, but he had known, and he had still planned on it being nothing but a dirty little secret.
Why was it different all of a sudden? Why did seeing the fact of his baby suddenly make him feel like it was his baby?
In the end, it was Andrej hanging up that drew him from his thoughts. “I’m gonna go call my mum no. Thank you for understanding, and thank you for being there for me today. It means a lot to me that you’re a decent person,” Andrej said, before hanging up.
Tom simply laid back down, staring at his photo some more with the door locked so he got a little more time to keep his child’s face to himself.
